It is a rather sad reflection that there appear to be as many questioning his September itinerary as there are congratulating him on the achievement. Apologies if my post caused/contributed to it.DFernandez wrote:You are right. But that may be because the rules are difficult to understand. From where I'm at, neither title regulation 1.53 nor the rating regulations make it clear that live ratings can be rounded (for the purposes of an application, or otherwise) whereas published ones, by definition, have been rounded. So applying for the title using a live rating of 2499.5 may not satisfy the 'greater than or equal to 2500' rule. (Indeed, it should not.) If my live were 2500.0 I would have no issue playing on.Alex Holowczak wrote:It does rather suggest he's failed to understand the rules.NickFaulks wrote: Quite extraordinary.
For what it is worth, I would much prefer to have my reading comprehension skills questioned than to run the risk of having my application thrown out on a technicality; other forum members or players are free to make their own decisions if faced with the same question themselves, but I put it to you that most people would choose the 100% option (unless their team captain in the Serbian league was putting a gun to their head and making them play on.)

Yes. Well done Daniel. The regulations are clearly unclear and sensible players would follow Daniel's itinerary.

Agreed, well done Daniel. I would have done exactly the same thing if I was in the same position, not that I ever will be, dammit.E Michael White wrote:Yes. Well done Daniel. The regulations are clearly unclear and sensible players would follow Daniel's itinerary.

Incidentally, the 'other' Simon Williams will appear on 'Only Connect' on Friday at 8.30pm, alongside his team 'The Cricketers'. Simon is a chess-player and an ombudsman, but I'm pretty sure that he isn't a cricketer!Roger de Coverly wrote:There's also the "other" Simon WilliamsStewart Reuben wrote: It was surprising that two people called Jack Rudd both played in Gibraltar.

It's claimed that the existence of a duplicate confused the ECF Office into paying the other one for some coaching work.

And Thomas Thorpe confirmed as a FIDE Arbiter (FA).

Is 20-21 relatively young to get that title?

Not only "relatively young"; 21 is a statutory minimum age for it.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:And Thomas Thorpe confirmed as a FIDE Arbiter (FA).

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
Interesting. I was going to ask at what age other UK FIDE Arbiters attained those titles (though some will have been arbiting since before the titles were introduced? Was this in 1982 as implied by the Handbook or has much changed since then?). I wonder how much interest a separate thread on FA, IA and so on will generate?IM Jack Rudd wrote:Not only "relatively young"; 21 is a statutory minimum age for it.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:And Thomas Thorpe confirmed as a FIDE Arbiter (FA).

I suppose this is the bit of the FIDE Handbook that applies:
http://www.fide.com/fide/handbook.html? ... w=category
2.1.4 Applicants for the title of IA/FA must be at least 21 years old.
2.1.5 Arbiters of national Level must be at least 16 years old.
So it goes National Arbiter (NA) first, then FIDE Arbiter (FA), and then International Arbiter (IA).
Are there statistics available for how many FAs and IAs there are?

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
Thanks.
As of 18 October 2017:
1792 FIDE Arbiters (FA)
2110 International Arbiters (IA)
439 International Organisers (IO)
I had forgotten about the IO title.
I guess there being more IAs despite the IA being a 'higher' title might be because the FA was maybe introduced more recently (I don't know the history of the titles)? I don't suppose there is anywhere that explains or states when the various titles were introduced?
I'd better not ask about the hierarchy and history of the instructor/trainer titles - expect to speculate that maybe these titles are more common in other countries? The ones listed on the FIDE website search form are: Developmental Instructor, National Instructor, FIDE Instructor, FIDE Trainer and FIDE Senior Trainer.
