Yang'Fan is almost 3 years older than Felix so those 2 would never have played in age group events http://ratings.fide.com/card.phtml?event=468584 . Maybe it helped Felix has he is ranked Number 3 in Venezuela so would be picked for plenty of top chess events for Venezuel. I have some film of Felix playing chess here in UK
Lets hope Daniel is our next GM
Well time to check the tortoises.

Dan drew with his brother Michael in round 3 - not a great pairing for either of them

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
Daniel's transfer to ENG was perfectly amicable. Thus it was as cheap as it could be. Singapore have a rule that you have to be resident there in order to represent them, so they provided no obstacles. I don't know why it took so long from when Daniel first consulted me. I gave the same advice to Wesley So, make the change as soon as possible. That helped their development as players.
We have quite a numbber of players who reside in England for a relatively brief period. Felix was such a player.

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
They were probably following some accelerated pairing rule earlier. In one of the French versions, higher rated players are awarded dummy points in the first few rounds. This has the advantage over the system favoured by British arbiters of enabling the pairings to continue to be generated by computer software. As with almost all such systems, the difference to standard first half v second half system, is that mass culls are postponed to later rounds.John McKenna wrote:

Thanks, Roger, that's the second time I've been caught out here by such pairing systems.

Roger >As with almost all such systems, the difference to standard first half v second half system, is that mass culls are postponed to later rounds.<
That isn't quite correct. There are culls later on, from round 2-4. But their total number is greatly reduced, provided the acceleration is continued until round 3.
If there isn't a huge spread in the ratings, then that particular reason for using acceleration disappears. If there isn't a large number of players compared with the number of rounds, that reason also disappears.
A third reason is that a player who starts well will meet a stronger field. He may require a lower score for a norm. Since the candidates don't have to fight as much for the full point, more norm may result.
The fourth reason is that it helps avoid some of the considerable diadvantages of the seeded Swiss, particularly the bouncing effect.

Re: 2nd GM norm for Daniel Fernandez
Three rounds to go. Yang-Fan joint leader on 4.5/6, two GMs played, performance rating 2594, looking good. Daniel on 4, but no GM opponents in rounds 1-7, so presumably no norm possible.
According to Chess Results Yang-Fan as Black beat a GM in round 3 in 19 moves, using his wacky a6 Dragon, but his opponent resigned when due just to lose a pawn, so I wonder if this is the full score.

How many GM norms does Yang-Fan have? I know he got one in 2013 at the Big Slick event, but is that the only one so far? Someone should really keep an up-to-date list somewhere in addition to the FIDE listings.

I did for a few years but it wasn't continued when I vacated the Int. Director and IRO posts.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:How many GM norms does Yang-Fan have?
