Bruzon - Ni Hua is advertised as a Blumenfeld. I've always been intrigued by that opening so I took a look, but sadly it's nothing of the sort.

Wow. That was a rook sacrifice followed by a sacrifice of another piece, with the Black king going from g8 to h3 via d5. Excellent king hunt!!

Coming up on Radio 4 at 08:45 - Dominic Lawson on Wei Yi v. Lazaro Bruzon.
Re: 6th Hainan Danzhou GM 2nd to 11th July 2015
ECF President Dominic Lawson waxed lyrical about the masterpiece saying that Wei Yi's long combination - in immediate reply to Bruzon's 19th move novelty - worked like "a beautiful Swiss watch movement..." and that it ended with that chessical rarity know as "a quiet move", which the presenter James Naughtie later called "a silent move". Naughtie had already admitted he was a novice when it came to chess.

It is claimed that 21.Nd5 has been analysed in print somewhere - New in Chess? Anyone know?

Can't help with that as I downsized from NIC to BCM some time ago.NickFaulks wrote:It is claimed that 21.Nd5 has been analysed in print somewhere - New in Chess? Anyone know?
Another participant has already done a similar feat with a Sicilian 29.Nd5... in a recent event (that was eclipsed here by Stavanger) - http://en.chessbase.com/post/capablanca ... -and-kunin
Thanks to Mick for those links, above, and for starting this thread.
Re: 6th Hainan Danzhou GM 2nd to 11th July 2015
Dennis Monokroussos (Chess Mind) goes further than Dominic's 19th move to announce the novelty - "All theory so far, and until the last move or two the position was still pretty common. Now for a novelty..." 21.Nd5!?N...
I also note that Pete Doggers (Chess.com) uses the Naughtie terminology - "The beauty of this classic king hunt lies in the many “silent” moves played."

The analysis at chess.com places it in the context of lines seen in several recent GM games. It's the number of times White is able to make a non-checking move that's remarkable for a King hunt. Amusingly in the position one move from the end, it's Black who is now threatening mate in one from the King on h3 and the Queen on a8.John McKenna wrote:Dennis Monokroussos (Chess Mind) goes further than Dominic's 19th move to announce the novelty - "All theory so far, and until the last move or two the position was still pretty common. Game of this century so far imo
I float like a pawn island and sting like an ignored knight

Followed by a positional smackdown (loss)
I float like a pawn island and sting like an ignored knight

More coverage of the great game (including embedded sound report by D. Lawson) here -

In round 4 only one game continuing (others all draws), Ni Hua-Sasikiran, with White pressing in a materially equal R & Ps endgame. Have to acknowledge the bravery of Sasikiran (and Bruzon) in entering this den of Chinese lions.
