Yes, nothing too exciting in the first round so far.

Are you involved with the commentary John?

Sorry, MJ, but anyone with any sense would not let me anywhere near a microphone at a public gathering.

Apart from Speakers' Corner on a Sunday, that is.

I thought Danny King had been practicing there the way he started today, at least he came round in the second session. Bizarre to say the least and a great shame when it goes that way. hat off to Jan, super smooth.

Yes thanks, the web site links do need to a little clarification.
That's all the links then - even Zaphod Beeblebrox would have trouble following all the live action.

Danny recovered himself then - not easy with younger guys who are more active players coming along I should imagine.

Anand 1/2 Adams, too.

Topalov may be starting to get the upper hand against Giri.

Still, the young guy is usually quite resilient and resourceful - he'll need to be so, today.

Sacha supposedly losing now to Naka, but the latter's king is kind of standing out!?

Nakamura looks like he's on his way to a win, the Berlin game seems to be the most tactical

I hope Anand doesn't go draw draw draw etc I like to see the guy play.

I agree, if he gets an interesting position that he knows his games can still be exciting but his opponents wisely have other ideas. I suspect he's more frustrated when nothing happens with white but very content when he's black. A good start for Mickey though, especially with another black tomorrow.

Also quite nice (with apologies to Ian D Calvert) -

47 50 IM Guramishvili Sopiko 2368 1 - 0 Calvert D Ian 1984 173

Sopiko & Anish, the happy couple, both winners today.

The forcing opening is apparently OK for Black, but he should play 10. .. f6 or 10. .. Nc6 as 11 Ne5+ is really annoying. Equally the engine thinks that 14. .. a6 to clarify matters is better than 14. .. Nh6, after which the "beginner's" rook ( P-R4 and R-R3) comes into play. From about move 16 onwards, White always seems better.

Playing 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. g3 is home brew of course, but it usually just transposes into a regular KIA or Closed Sicilian position. It has the minor advantage over 3. d3 of leaving some uncertainty as to whether d4 is intended.
