Rambaldi is now a GM

Abu Dhabi approved titles from which I also see that Matthew Carr is now an IA :D

Alan Merry's game is interesting. He has just made a knight sac. but I'm not sure if it is sound. ( move 16)

Wonderful to see a pairing like Tarjan-Timman. Last time they played was in Indonesia in 1983 - oh and Jim has 0.5 out of 4 against Jan.

And has Alan Merry gone mad - is that piece sac even remotely sound. I know Greenfeld gets into all sorts of time trouble but really!

They don't play that often. When they do, it's usually a draw by mutual respect.
Nearly at the time control with plenty of time in hand.

Nigel seems a bit better structurally, may be able to play for a win but a draw looks like the most likely result.

Yes Adams-Short is now drawn.

David Howell surpassing himself - now has to play 20 moves solely on increments.

Yes, I fear this could be the one which goes wrong. Granda Zuniga is a very level-headed player.

David Howell got the draw after 71 moves. He is an amazing player.

As of 7.50pm Chess24 is showing a final position where White mates in 26 though giving the result as a draw.
We are becoming used to the ends of games not being shown correctly.

Since Black has a draw with 71...Rxh4+ or even 71...Kf4 I suppose Granda offered a draw with his 71st. Then after it was agreed, somebody randomly plonked the black king on e4.
Howell certainly made it hard on himself today!

An interesting suggestion from David Smerdon on Facebook: Some more missed magic in a Granda game: 54...b4!! 55.Nc1 bxc3 56.Nxa2 cxb2 and White's extra forces are paralysed!

But after 57 Nc1 (or maybe a4 first) surely it's still only a draw? 57..bc1Q 58 Rxc1 Bb2 59 Rd1 Bxa3 60 Rd5+ and Rxa5.

I expect David saw that. But might have been a better try than his weird piece sac on c3.
