World Rapid & Blitz Championships

Post by Tim Harding » Sat Oct 10, 2015 10:57 am

The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships are on in Berlin for the next five days, with Magnus Carlsen defending his titles.

The three days of Rapid start 1pm today (2pm local time). Gawain Jones is playing.

The 2-day blitz championship will follow. Gawain is also the only English player in that.

Yes I was wondering if he could bilocate. Should have said "listed as entered".
Probably Gawain's only going to play the blitz.

The whole list for the Rapid on the site is strange, with some players' forenames first and others surnames first.

Most likely they have a registration process when people who entered but don't turn up will be excluded from the draw.

"Probably", I think you can assume definitely considering he is still in the Isle of Man

Actually disregard the URL I gave earlier.
AGON have now launched the glossy new site worldchess.com and there is a link:
http://worldchess.com/rapid-and-blitz-c ... ship-2015/

How this will work remains to be seen, could be teething troubles as with all new sites.
I don't see any definitive list of entries or round 1 pairings yet.

There are already various other articles posted e.g. on the new film about Fischer. I expect to be contributing some historical articles to this site later.

I am waiting to see where live coverage of games will appear. Probably on chess24 which seems to be setting up to start.

Even the commentators are confused.

I had a look on chess24 and although I tend not to use the commentary anyway I received the message "This content is not available in your location due to licensing restrictions"

DId you try again? I have no problem in Ireland but also I am a Premium member of chess24.

The coverage remains a bit chaotic. The round 3 game being shown as Anand-Salem (a Scotch) is actually Nepomniachtchi-Bologan and vice versa...

Still the same after a refresh but not a problem as there's the Isle of Man, Women's Grand Prix, rugby and my coaching in less than half an hour to more than compensate for commentary I probably wouldn't use anyway :)

They have fixed the names on Anand's game now.

Great game by Saleh who sac'd a R and forced perpetual with seconds to spare. Vishy had to be careful not to get mated.

I had the same issue which I was able to solve by using a VPN and giving myself a foreign IP address. It then worked. Later I found a simpler way - you can watch it here with no problems:

Not for the first time Magnus makes something out of nothing to win a rook ending in round 12 against Ivanchuk.

So Carlsen has a 1.5-point lead with 3 rounds left. He is Black against Leinier Dominguez Perez in round 13. It would be good to see a pairing of Carlsen against Kramnik before the end of the tournament...

Pairings and previous results are easier to see here than on the official website:

Magnus has drawn in round 13 (Black against Dominguez), finishing with a few seconds more than he started with!

17 Nb6 from Ivanchuk was a nice trick albeit the pawn gained has now been won back.
