David Howell beat the fifth seed GM Matlakov in 31 moves in round six and now shares the lead with Duda on 5.5/6. They will meet in round seven, starting any moment now according to the schedule.

As one who once lost to Keres http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1072643 and who also played blitz games against Howell when he was aged 8, I'll be following the live coverage of Duda v Howell with interest.

Howell seems to have played a steady draw; I only saw the last 10 moves or so (on chess24). The next round starts at 2.30pm GMT.

Boards 2 and 3 were also drawn but Duda and Howell are joined on 6/7 by Jumabayev and Miton. Pairings not available yet (1406).

Brilliant round 8 attack by Howell with knight and rook sacs, quite in the style of the youthful Keres, gives him the sole lead on 7/8.

Smashing win by Howell, now in the sole lead:

David is now the sole leader as board 2 was drawn.

David also spent a minute on a half on move 3 deciding to go for this.
Yet he was ahead on the clock after his combination and clearly had it all calculated well during his long thinks. His opponent's clock-handling was poor, using less than a minute on the critical reply to e2-e4.

Last three rounds are tomorrow.

David seemed to be doing well against Svidler for more than 20 moves until he ran very short of time

Having lost, he then drew with Gelfand in the penultimate round

No shame in those results. Now he is blitzing Sutovsky in a line he maybe knows well? About 8 minutes ahead on the clock after a dozen moves.

EDIT: Gelfand drew with Kovalenko and Ganguly with Berkes, so Kovalenko has won (9 pts) and David is playing for a share of second.
Sutovsky has grabbed the a8-R and dared David to do his worst.
