Game 4 as a "must win" for Black sees the Sicilian. Magnus plays an open Sicilian but dodges the question as to which main line by playing the rarer 5. f3 idea. It has the advantage that you can play it, if prepared to settle for a draw, with comforting "occupy the centre" moves as opposed to the desperate attempts to maintain the initiative seen in some lines.

The obvious answer is Ra1 winning the queen but I suppose you really want to know what idea he missed that he couldn't save the queen by perhaps Qc3, Qd2 or running away to h4 to try and counter threaten something against the black king. The best answer is probably the idea of the moves NxB+ followed by Ng3+ and Rh1++ which is kind of hard to stop without shedding the queen.

Indeed. Watching without an engine I was surprised Magnus didn’t play Qf2 instead of Qxf4. Then when he went for the sequence ending in Rc8 check I couldn’t see the mate and thought he’d blown it.

THEN

the app I was watching on posted 0-1 and I nearly soiled the sofa. That really would have been the world championship of chokes.
