Game 4 as a "must win" for Black sees the Sicilian. Magnus plays an open Sicilian but dodges the question as to which main line by playing the rarer 5. f3 idea. It has the advantage that you can play it, if prepared to settle for a draw, with comforting "occupy the centre" moves as opposed to the desperate attempts to maintain the initiative seen in some lines.

The obvious answer is Ra1 winning the queen but I suppose you really want to know what idea he missed that he couldn't save the queen by perhaps Qc3, Qd2 or running away to h4 to try and counter threaten something against the black king. The best answer is probably the idea of the moves NxB+ followed by Ng3+ and Rh1++ which is kind of hard to stop without shedding the queen.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Isn't Nc2 just a forced repetition?

Covered by @BBCNewsnight just now with Jovanka Houska, Malcolm Pein and Susan Polgar. Evan Davis describing the match as a "superpower standoff by proxy"; Malcolm Pein saying the match is a throwback to the 1970s and 1990s. Really?

Depends whether you view Norway as a superpower.

Hmm. Bxe6, gxh4, Kh1 and set up Alekhine's canon on the g-file?

Ha ha did anybody ask her how many people were watching the match?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Nice final touch, reminds me of Kramnik's coup de grace (also the 4th rapid game, of course) in 2006.

I’m not convinced that this was the most prepared he has ever been for a news item.

Indeed. Watching without an engine I was surprised Magnus didn’t play Qf2 instead of Qxf4. Then when he went for the sequence ending in Rc8 check I couldn’t see the mate and thought he’d blown it.

THEN

the app I was watching on posted 0-1 and I nearly soiled the sofa. That really would have been the world championship of chokes.
