Aeroflot open in Moscow

Post by Tim Harding » Tue Mar 01, 2016 2:10 pm

The Aeroflot open, very strong as usual, started today.
Gelfand is top seed then two Chinese players.
Bu Xiangzhi is second seed.

On board 3 Wei Yi is having a really wild game right now.

Chess24 has the top games but only commentary in Spanish it seems. Maybe that will change for later rounds.

Very strong is an understatement, Gelfand has black against Timofeev (2576) in round 1

I'd assume (move 42) a draw

Bu has drawn with Socko and Wei Yi lost to Potkin, Nepo has drawn as has Matlakov, Kamsky too, and Jobava has lost

The top six boards in today's round 7 were drawn so there's a leading bunch on 5 points, Fedoseev being the only winner who joined the top group.
Gelfand's game yesterday was a 119-move win in a queen ending.

Tomorrow:
Bartel (5) v Gelfand (5); Fedoseev (5) v Najer (5); Matlakov (5) v Bu Xiangzhiu (4.5) and there are twelve more players on 4.5 including Nepomniachtchi, Paco Vallejo and Kamsky who drew in under 12 moves today with Black against a Chinese opponent.

Wei Yi is in the group on 4.

Fedoseev played 2 Be2 d5 3 e5 against Najer's Caro-Kann and lost. Board 3 a draw.
Gelfand has a small endgame edge against Bartel which he will try to win in order to go into last round level with Najer.
They already met, draw in round 5.
Meanwhile the Reykjavik open just started,

Najer has the better tiebreak, so must be favourite

Kamsky - Goganov (rd 8 )

30 OO 1-0

Not a frequently observed way to finish a 30-move game!

Gelfand is still trying with R, B, P versus R and N

A FEW MINUTES LATER: Gelfand drew. So Najer is in pole position to win the tournament.

Najer plays Kamsky and both will have a better tiebreak than Gelfand so Boris cant win it now

There have been some great games in this tournament, with very enterprising play. There have also been too many of the simple oversights that are not supposed to heppen when top players have a 30 second increment to work with. I wonder whether nine tough games on successive days is just too much.

These guys are professionals; no need to feel sorry for them. Anyway there have been some quick draws. The board 3 and board 4 players on 5.5/8 settled for quick draws and a share of a decent prize.

On board 5 Bartel (5.5) is playing Black against someone on 5 so he is going for a win and anything could happen.

Top two boards slugging it out after three hours. Kamsky played an Alekhine and it's roughly equal. Gelfand is a bit better against Jumabayev.

A lot of live chess to watch this afternoon as well as the T20 cricket Ireland v Oman!

Bartel has drawn, as has the top board game - Gelfand stands better so looks like Najer will win either outright or on tiebreak

Well deserved by Najer.
Gelfand paying the price for a spineless quick round 2 draw with white against a player rated 300 lower than him. Of course it also got him a softer draw.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Maybe unfair on Gelfand... If the online engine evaluations are correct he got into a bad opening line and was slightly minus from a round move 10 and had to struggle to keep the disadvantage to only about half a pawn.

Second on tiebreak isn't bad for the old geezer?

Of course Najer and Bartel deserved their 1st and 3rd with their enterprising play.
Now this is over and the Women's match basically decided we can enjoy Reykjavik tomorrow. Big guns will be meeting soon.
Only six players on 3/3 because of all those half-point byes. A lot of strong players on 2.5.
Marc Esserman has White against Beliavsky after coming close to beating Rapport with Black.

Maybe send him this example of how to play with a firm spine?
