Reykjavik open 8-16 March

Post by Tim Harding » Tue Mar 08, 2016 4:54 pm

Round 1 under way with the usual massacre of the innocents.
Gawain Jones is the only top British man so far as I can tell - 9th seed and he's a pawn up in a Q ending.

Mamedyarov already won his game on top board.

I see Jovanka Houska is playing too. I am surprised more Britons have not entered.
Lower on the list I see James Jackson, David Jameson (WLS), and some sub-2000 UK players: Christopher Bak, Daniel Rowan.

Also playing according to the above page are two aspiring teenagers from Ireland: Tom O'Gorman (2067) who is 13 years old and was on the team that won the Glorney Cup last year, with his sister Alice (1620) who is 15 or 16 years old. Good luck to them.

235 players in all.

Beliavsky had a narrow escape against a 2000-rated Icelander and eventually the game was drawn.

Top boards for round 3 at 7pm are:

GM Rapport v IM Esserman [author of Morra Gambit book who beat Nigel Short and drew with Anand in Gibraltar]
IM K. S. Holm v GM Sargissian
GM Cheparinov v IM Justin Tan (Australia)
IM Bjorn Thorfinsson v GM Hrant Melkumyan
GM Gawain Jones v IM Bragi Thorfinsson

GMs Mamedyarov, Andreikin, Movsesian and Agdestein are in a large cohort who are taking the evening off.

Irish teenager Tom O'Gorman had a walkover in round 1 (he would have won anyway against a low-rated Icelander) and drew with FM James Jackson this morning. Next he has Black against Tania Sachdev.

I was wrong when I wrote that the evening round began at 7pm (misled by Chess24 which is on Hamburg time).
It's well under way at 7.30 GMT so I think it started at 6pm.

LATER: Top two boards drawn; Gawain has won.

Should be some exciting chess on top board.

It's exciting to watch Rapport play. He likes that f-pawn of his.

Why do I bother? Somebody who has been dead for 8 years is still stronger than me!
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

But Spassky is stronger now. Maybe they should play.
