So why wasn't it played? It's the first move that anyone would consider, we all like threatening mate in one. Howell must have seen some mirage, I just can't work out what.

I knew quite a few GMs, mostly Russians 2400-2500 working there as coaches and organizers. To put it crudely, they were skivvys. Mostly, but not always, they were told what to do. Like I said, a soulless place indeed.IM Jack Rudd wrote:Hmmmmmm.MJMcCready wrote: LIke I said go to the gulf to get money only, don't go there for any other reason unless you are autistic or something.

100,000 baht (just over £2000) is the lowest first prize on the planet for a recognized international tournament? Which planet would that be?MJMcCready wrote:The Thai Open offers arguably the lowest first prize on the planet for a recognized international tournament.

I wonder if it may have been one of the words in the extract that was quoted.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Yes Nick - for some reason (probably a king was already on e4) - I saw the result of Gawain's game as a draw - but he clearly won.
Tough event and double round on Saturday especially so.

Apologies, I have removed the offending word. I never mean to cause offence but if I have a few drinks I become a little childish and silly.Carl Hibbard wrote:Yes I noticed too not really appropriate was itNickFaulks wrote:I expect Jack was commenting on your choice of one particular word.
