FIDE Infighting ?

Post by Roger de Coverly » Thu Apr 14, 2016 6:46 pm

The most recent posting on the FIDE website
http://www.fide.com/component/content/a ... de-pb.html

contains the following
1PB-2016/12. To create a Committee of Messrs. Bastian, Ochoa and Freeman to investigate the case of Y. Garrett vs Italian Chess Federation.

A quick Google confirms that Y. Garrett is Italian, and is or was a member of the ACP Board as well as FIDE's anti-cheating commission.

Does anyone know what the case is about?
Any documentation available from the FIDE website?

I'm guessing (and I'm not ruling out that I could be completely wrong) that its something connected to the Loris Cereda case from a couple of years ago. The Italian mayor was accused of cheating but this was overturned on appeal by the Italian courts in April 2013. Yuri Garrett was a prominent spokesman against Cereda at the time the original incident was alleged to have occurred and the FIDE committee that had just been constituted could be to look into Garrett's role at the time. This is the original chess vibes article http://www.chessvibes.com/?q=reports/it ... s-cheating. You'll note that he actually praises the Italian federation for their action. I've also added the Italian Courts appeal decision which unfortunately for me is in Italian but I'm informed basically states that the evidence that Cereda was found guilty on was far below the standard of proof needed. http://www.federscacchi.it/doc/notcom/d ... cereda.pdf
