Newest English IM?
I hope that this is right; one reason for posting here is to encourage others, more adept at researching and calculating Elo changes, to confirm.
Today Alan Merry beat the genial Lithuanian GM Eduardas Rozentalis in the last round at Teplice, and thereby gained 20.6 Elo points overall: see
http://chess-results.com/tnr201996.aspx ... 821&snr=29
Since his current rating is 2390 and he already has six (!) IM norms, that should amount to the IM title; but (I think) he lost somewhere between 10-11 points at the Gatwick event in late May which are also yet to be counted. I think it more likely that he has made 2400 than that he has 2399, but if someone could check I would be grateful (presumably it depends on whether his current 2390 was really 2389.6 or more like 2390.2?).

Using the FIDE rating calculator to input his results here: https://ratings.fide.com/view_source.phtml?code=132059 I came up with the figure of -14.4 for Gatwick.Jonathan Rogers wrote:I hope that this is right; one reason for posting here is to encourage others, more adept at researching and calculating Elo changes, to confirm.

The Gatwick event website shows him losing 14.4 points, so that would make his new rating 2396.Jonathan Rogers wrote:I hope that this is right; one reason for posting here is to encourage others, more adept at researching and calculating Elo changes, to confirm.

Thank you both. All I could see was a deduction of 0.72 from Gatwick - oh, but his K-factor is 20, isn't it - silly me ...
Well, his next game, then.

Re: Newest English IM?
His August 2016 rating is 2396. Wonder when his next rated tournament/game is?
James Adair is in a similar position, on 2481 and needing 19 points to get the GM title.
I expect both to do it, but it must certainly be nerve-wracking.
Is it worse to have the norms and need to get the rating, or to have the rating and need the norms?

A tricky question. One downside to needing the rating is that every single rated game you play is a pressure game but having said that the pressure of needing X result for a norm is a lot of pressure especially as you don't know when the next opportunity will come. Did I mention pressure enough?Christopher Kreuzer wrote:His August 2016 rating is 2396. Wonder when his next rated tournament/game is?

Not sure if there's so much pressure grading wise for someone like Adair who has very obviously been playing >2500 for a bit now. It'll come.
(unless work/life etc really starts getting in the way of course!).
If you were talking about say someone who was 'normally' at ~2300 but prone to erratically bad/good tournaments so got their 3 IM norms but was reliant on a combination of really hard work and dumb luck combining to hit the required grade, then yes, I'm sure that would be 'fun'.

Interesting thought but that's not the sentiment of any player I've known who has been chasing rating points and normsMartinCarpenter wrote:Not sure if there's so much pressure grading wise for someone like Adair who has very obviously been playing >2500 for a bit now. It'll come.

You'd know much better than me!
Specifically in the case of Adair though, I'm really not sure if he is really chasing it. He's been in full time non chess work for a couple of years now and little signs of varying from playing the 4NCL + the odd other thing and taking what comes. Might well still get nervous when he gets really close of course
