Cheddleton have beaten their Dutch opponents 5.5-0.5, which should guarantee them an interesting round three pairing.

Bit of a rough time for White Rose so far it seems.

Perhaps it's something in the water? Safer to stick to beer?MartinCarpenter wrote:Bit of a rough time for White Rose so far it seems.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Re: 2016 European Club Cup
Two tough matches against higher rated teams but some notable individual results. Martin's draw with a 2502 GM, Kieran's draw with a 2360 IM and Svetlana's win against a 2243 today. It's a sign of James Adair's progress that a draw with a 2521 GM no longer seems newsworthy.MartinCarpenter wrote:Bit of a rough time for White Rose so far it seems.

Round 3 Alkaloid (No2 seeds) v Cheddleton. That'll please Kevin Thurlow, and the potential, top board game is world No13 Ding Liren v David Howell.Leonard Barden wrote:Cheddleton have beaten their Dutch opponents 5.5-0.5, which should guarantee them an interesting round three pairing.
Alkaloid have 2700 players (Andreikin, Eljanov, Jakovenko, Yu Yangyi, Kryvoruchko) down to board six. Boards 7 and 8 are much lower ranked and from Macedonia, explained by the fact that the sponsor Alkaloid is a drug manufacturing firm based in Skopje.

I am pleased!
http://www.alkaloid.com.mk/content/Pdf/ ... t_2009.pdf
reveals that Alkaloid is (primarily and not surprisingly) a pharmaceutical company in Macedonia and they even mention the chess club in the company's annual report. The club seems to have been going about 20 years.
Government Chemists Chess Club never got a mention in the annual report (we weren't that good of course!) but the Government Chemist did give us a glass of sherry and congratulate us when we won trophies in the 70s. He left and that tradition ended.
Next task is to look at the WADA list again and see how many alkaloids are listed.

Good to see Fiona leading her troops into battle, Joan of Arc style, rather than watching from the bench.LawrenceCooper wrote:Bo. 2 Alkaloid Rtg FED - 17 Cheddleton Rtg FED 0 : 0

Ginger-GM seems to be going down fast, though in a blaze of attempted glory.

Re: 2016 European Club Cup
Heading for 1.5-4.5 at the moment, with David, board two and Fiona still level and the rest losing. Very entertaining games Jakovenko v Williams and also Eggleston v Yu Yangyi, with a WN on b8 and bishops on a6 and a7.

A very good day for Siberia with Kramnik leading them to a win against Legacy Square Moscow and St Nikolaj upsetting Padova.

They only have six players there so no room for rotation.Tim Harding wrote:Good to see Fiona leading her troops into battle, Joan of Arc style, rather than watching from the bench.LawrenceCooper wrote:Bo. 2 Alkaloid Rtg FED - 17 Cheddleton Rtg FED 0 : 0

Re: 2016 European Club Cup
Upset results today for both White Rose and Abergavenny.
White Rose lost 4-2 to a team of players with an average rating almost 400 points lower than theirs, with no-one over 2000.
Abergavenny drew with a team whose average rating was almost 300 points higher than theirs.

The Turkish team beating White Rose appears to consist of juniors, so playing several hundred points above their rating isn't a total surprise.Ian Thompson wrote: White Rose lost 4-2 to a team of players with an average rating almost 400 points lower than theirs, with no-one over 2000.
