Guildford chess team player reaches 2800 rating

Post by Leonard Barden » Sat Jul 09, 2016 7:19 pm

....though not quite what you expected from the headline. World No 4 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave defeated the No3, Fabianco Caruana, in the opening round of Dortmund today to take his live rating to 2802.

I'm assuming that's his first time over 2800? Impressive, very close to Caruana as 3 & 4 in the world, if MVL beats Kramnik later in the event, he could end up as number 2

Live chess ratings gives MVL's previous peak as 2798, achieved on 1 July.

Yes, I see he has the 10th highest all time live rating (above Giri, so that's now 11 have breached this barrier)

MVL white against Kramnik today, so his rating will go up again unless he loses, and a win takes him above Vlad

MVL drew, up to Live ratings no 3 @ 2803.4, overtaking Caruana and 7 points behind Kramnik

Next up he has Nisipeanu (with black), Buhmann (w), Najer (b), Pono (w), Dominguez (b)

MVL wins to move to 2808 and number 2 on the live ratings as Vlad and Fab are still playing

From Chess Vibes:
While Vachier-Lagrave's country has declared three days of national mourning, he is supposed to be enjoying the pinnacle of his career. Nearly every round in Dortmund has brought his rating to a record high. Also consider:
Thanks to the middling performances thus far by GM Vladimir Kramnik and GM Fabiano Caruana, Vachier-Lagrave leapfrogged them both to world number two in live ratings, his best ever.
He's added 80+ points to his rating in the last 12 months.
His 2808.3 live rating is the 10th-best all-time.
MVL hasn't lost any classical games this year.
If he holds on to win, this would be the biggest tournament victory of his life (Dortmund is even stronger than, say, Biel 2015).

How would MVL's prospects rank alongside other actual and putative challengers for the World Title from the younger generation (e.g. Karjakin, Caruana, Giri, Nakamura)?

Good question, Chris, it depends if he can keep improving, obviously he hasn't yet been in the Candidates, but on this form he would be in with a chance of winning the Candidates, although not much between half a dozen potential challengers

It would be interesting to find out what he has done to improve so much (partly so that we could see if David Howell & Gawain Jones could follow suit)

The French have put a lot of effort into improving chess, and MVL is their first real challenger to come through - again, would be interesting to see what lessons their are for the ECF

I assume MVL is the strongest French player ever

Do the French claim Alekhine (French citizen from 1927) as one of their own?

MVL beats Pono to take his live rating to 2812

Grischuk's highest ever rating of 2813.6 would require a win with black tomorrow against Dominguez, but MVL looks like he has won with a round to spare

From July 2008 to July 2016, MVL improved his rating from 2681 to 2798, a rise of 117. David Howell's went from 2561 to 2663 ( 102 ). Gawain's went from 2549 to 2650 ( 101 ).

I'm sure they all work very hard on improving their game. It seems that this year something has "clicked" for MVL, as at different times it has for the English players, but the main reason why MVL is established as one of the supreme players of his generation is that he always has been.

MVL finishes Dortmund with a live rating of 2810.8, Kramnik on 2808.3 after winning today, and Caruana on 2806.5

MVL plays Svidler in a match in Biel later this month, so he'll need to win the match to retain his rating, which won't be easy

Then all 3 play the Sinquefield Cup next month

No idea, but he's clearly far stronger than Alekhine ever was.
