I presume that today's good win finally secures Alan Merry the rating for his IM title?

Good job he got the rating yesterday then! That does seem unusually cruel.

The fire alarm has just sounded at my hotel.

Fortunately, I had seen the notice informing people that it was a test.

Nice to see Alan doing well. 2 years ago Sept at CCF I got the downfloat & thought it odd that I got the strongest player in the tournament.
We had a good game - close but no win for me. He was not playing well lost another game. Yet in October at Isle of Mann he had a fantastic result.

Hope he gets his title and will see if I can find out how he is doing. I expect he can get a result.

Also it will be nice to see how others are doing.

Completely agree Nick. It's nice to see one of our youngsters coming through. I have often seen Alan at tournaments accompanied by his mother. I think that's not a bad idea for junior players and certainly didn't do Matthew Sadler any harm. The benefits are that you have support there when things are not going well or you are just nervous for instance. I have often seen younger players, especially when are playing away from home and they lose get angry, depressed or just start getting into the drinking culture. It's so easy to do. Anyway Alan outplayed his opponent in Round 2, he had a slightly better pawn structure on the queenside but to outplay a 2564 GM from there was mighty impressive. Has to be worth a look:

The cups of tea are a bit odd though.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

It's a pretty accurate guess so far.
