A genuinely impressive achievement, it does seem to confirm Hou has hit a bit of a "wall" recently however.
They thought it was all over....it is now. Game 5 ends in a draw to win Nigel the match.

Game 6 is under way. Nigel is Black in a Spanish/ Ruy Lopez.

Using the Chigorin treatment with .. Na5, .. c5 and .. Qc7 as well. None of this Breyer, Smyslov or Zaitsev stuff. Not even threatening the Marshall.

Consolation win for Hou Yifan to wrap it up. Well done both players.

Interesting footnote to this was that Nigel I believe was trying to ensure that once he had won the match the last game would not be rated. Personally I was completely unaware of regulation 6.5 which states "Where a match is over a specific number of games, those played after one player has won shall not be rated.". Guess most of us have never played a FIDE rated match so would be unaware of such a rule and you wonder how many arbiters and organisers are.

Nigel talking briefly about the match and endearing himself to the organiser by talking about the last game not being rated: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM9VgDzDgeE

An arbiter for such a match should be aware of the rule and in general would be, I think.

You can apply to FIDE for a derogation, provided that you do so beforehand and make it clear to the players.

The Regulations for the 2015 British Knockout Championship, and for the forthcoming 2016 Championship, both state:

"All six games of the Final are to be played, even if the outcome is already decided. Permission from FIDE for any dead games to be FIDE rated will be sought."

FIDE have rated matches inappropriately for many years now, as among other reasons the winner normally gains too many points and the loser loses too many. Even within the limitations of rating systems, a better way is to calculate the expected and actual percentage score and treat it as a single game result.

Isn't that what happens?

These six game matches alongside a regular Swiss are becoming something of a standard pattern and outside of the World Championship, the only matches of six games or more. I wonder when FIDE put in the rule about not rating the final game(s). When Kasparov played his series of matches against Miles and others in the run up to his title challenge, were these matches rated in their entirety?

Nigel would presumably have seen the 2015 British Knockout regulations even though he withdrew for health reasons.

Reverting to Hoogeven, it looks to me as though all six games have been submitted for FIDE rating.

Hmmm ...

And what would that suggest to you, David?
