69th Russian Championship

Post by JustinHorton » Wed Oct 26, 2016 7:14 pm

Anybody following? Anybody know the tiebreak rules?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Slightly following it, interested to see if Svidler can win again

Tiebreaks are on chess results as first most blacks, but not sure if that is correct?

I've been watching Svidler's daily post-mortem videos on chess24 and enjoying them.

He won the 1st round, so I thought maybe he could, but drew the remaining 10

Looks like Grischuk is winning

Really strange error from Kokarev

Jakovenko would win the tournament if he wins today, because he's won with Black? Other than that I'm none the wiser.

chess24live has
In case of a tie for first two 15+10 rapid games will be played followed, if necessary, by 5 vs 4 Armageddon

so I'm confused now

Riazantsev better against Jakovenko, and definitely wins it if he converts the win to take him to 7/11 as Fedoseev appears about to lose

Fedoseev has lost, blowing his chance, Tomashevsky is going to win to join Grischuk in the lead so it's down to whether Riazantsev can win his game to clinch first on his own.

Riazantsev looking favourite at the moment.

Svidler mentioned Riazantsev has been working for Kramnik recently in his video after their game; presumably that is some of the best training you can get whilst simultaneous being paid :-)

Good to see you back here Paul

Interesting, as I can't say Riazantsev is a name I am familiar with, but he has now won his first Russian title, half a point clear of Grischuk and Tomashevsky, a point clear of Svidler and Fedoseev

Kosteniuk won the women's title with a round to spare

Thanks Mick.

Actually Riazantsev is one of the first players I look for in TWIC, He is king of the Caro-Kann theoreticians. But I realise I have specialised tastes.

Svidler's comment Riazantsev has switched his focus to coaching/ seconding rather than playing probably explains his rating dropping a bit. So although he is still 2650, I think he is a surprise winner.

A report by a promising young correspondent: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/ ... ard-barden

In passing I have the Cafferty/ Taimanov book - it is excellent
