It's got a little last-round-in-the-U140 feel to it, for sure...

Smirin has lost and none of the others in the top 4 look like winning either. Maybe a draw for Gawain will do it? One would hope so, since a win is not on the cards.

Ragger & Xiong have now drawn, so Gawain needs to find a way to draw

Doesn't look like the sort of -1.5 where you have a lot of chances to mix it up.

perhaps Gawain hallucinated a perpetual, having seen all three of his rivals drawing

The stockfish at chessbomb seems to be finding lines where White can use the Queen actively without succumbing to a forced repetition. I' would suspect there's a lot of play still to come. One engine line lead to a position where White had Queen, Knight and e pawn against Black's Queen, g and h pawn.JustinHorton wrote:Doesn't look like the sort of -1.5 where you have a lot of chances to mix it up.

In a human game, the result is not yet obvious. But 44...Nxe4 was something of a miss, which hopefuly he will not come to regret.
All the contenders today probably wish they could have played Nepo instead

Don't think Magnus ever actually had a win there?

No, but I don't suppose that's the view he'll be taking.

Re: Tata Steel 2017
Mark Crowther thinks he's beaten Ragger on tiebreak and hence plays in the Masters next year.

Yes, as the first tiebreak was mutual scores. Congratulations on a lot of hard work paying off!

Re: Tata Steel 2017
Great save from Gawain, and an excellent tournament overall; not sure he's played 13 rounds of this kind of strength; a whole year to prepare for playing in the A group next January, let's hope he can have an impact like Adhiban has this year
