Aronian really need soutright first to give him a chance of a top 2 finish in the GP and a spot in the Candidates

Shak and Grischuk are the ones to watch in first and joint 3rd; ding in 2nd and MVL joint 3rd will know what they need to do in the final event in Majorca

That's a repeat of Sharjah (GP1) which also had Mickey white in round 1; hopefully he'll win again, and have another good tournament

I humbly suggest trying to view the event on youtube. May the best battler emerge more victorious.

A convincing win for Adams in round 1. Giri lost with white to Radjabov and there have been draws in the Gelfand-Mamedyarov and Svidler-Jakovenko games.

Results -

Gelfand 1/2 Mamedyarov
Svidler 1/2 Jakovenko
Adams 1-0 Saleh
Giri 0-1 Radjabov

Despite what I quoted at top of page, Giri's a goner. Against Radjabov he got his pieces pulled out of position and allowed Black to punch through to get at the WK with queen & rook, with his own Q, R & N bystanding.

Eljanov - a pawn up in K &P ending - should win against Hou.

Inarkiev - a pawn up in R & B of opposite colours ending - may not have enough to defeat Grischuk.

Aronian probably won't get anything more than a draw against Li.

Riazantsev-Harikrishna is anyone's guess.

Eljanov did indeed win and Inarkiev drew, no opposite coloured bishops though, they were exchanged soon after the time control. Li Chau & Harikrishna pressing in the remaining two games.

Thanks Loz. It's all very fast furious and confusing - WB, BB... Li, Chao, Li Chao, Chao Li, etc.
