As things stand, Shak would be going to 295 points in the overall GP, with a great chance of getting 1 of the 2 spots for the Candidates

Grischuk & MVL on 227, Ding on 225 are close; Svidler & Radjabov would have 87 but with 2 events to play, rather than the 1 of the top 5

That would be my guess, especially with black.
Sure enough, after 12 moves........

I missed that

Earlier here I called Ernesto Inarkiev, the current European Champ, a "local man" - I was miles out.

He was born in the Kyrgiz Osh region, relocated to Kalmykia and is now the President of the Ingushetia Chess Federation.

In an interview at the Moscow GP he said he was representing Ingushetia in the event.

Today he plays fellow back marker 'Mickey' Adams. I hope they'll both be trying for a win.

My off-the-cuff impression is that Adams has been trying (too?) hard and getting unbalanced positions that are promising but easier for his younger opponents, like Nepo and Hari, to defend than for Adams to win.

Maybe Adams could take a leaf from Gelfand's playbook - pace himself and wait for his chances rather than forcing his own hand.

Today Gelfand plays Harikrishna - who has been winning consistently against Adams - I can't see Gelfand overdoing it and going all out for a win at any cost.

I'll be watching boards 6 & 9, with added interest, to see how the two veterans cope with the youngers.

Including the 3x repetition.

Draws in the Tomashevsky, Hammer & Salem games but more importantly a morale boosting win for Mickey Adams :D

Can anyone remember the last time Mickey lost three FIDE rated games in a row. Would his FIDE rating record allow that kind of analysis? Hmm. Maybe best not to do that. Morale-boosting win, indeed. Maybe he can start a run of wins?

I suspect the London Chess Classic in 2011.

I'd settle for an unbeaten finish to the tournament, especially with two blacks likely.
