on the rest day Nakamura made an appearance at the Central Chess Club on Gogolevsky Boulevard, where he was given a very nice watch by Natalia Shevando, the wife of Oleg Skortsov. For winning the Zurich Chess Challenge (sponsored by Skvortsov) three times in a row, the American player received a Rolex Sea-Dweller.

J'adoubeamura - Ding drew too, so very tight at the top still

Mickey drew with Vallejo, as dod Harikrishna & Tomashevsky

I assume Giri will win

Yes, you can rely on Giri to ensure the round isn't all draws :) Hou Yifan-Hammer still going but the white advatnage disappeared some time ago.

Yes, what an odd game. I'd given up on that one and then suddenly I looked up and it was about plus fifty.

It looks as though there was no reason for Black to break open the position with 65...f4.

Yes, that was a Hammer horror...

Off the top of my head, I think I saw that 65... e5+ would have been the way for Hammer to avoid becoming the anvil!?

ChessBase report from Max Avdeev on Round 7. Clearly he blames the system for the amount of draws

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with the cautious way the leaders approached today's games. Vachier Lagrave-Radjabov and Mamedyarov-Grischuk were not the kind of games we wanted to see. One can blame the system that puts players on the brink of elimination from by a single loss. Isn't it remarkable that the top 10 players in this list haven't lost a single game in seven rounds of play? Apparently, being cautious pays off. As for risk-takers, ask Nepo how it's working out for him in Moscow."

Adveev then promises some hope for Round 8 "Another intriguing match-up tomorrow is Grischuk-Nakamura. It is not only making their own way forward, it's also sinking of the opposition is what at stake. There's a great history of uncompromising battles between the two, so they'd better not disappoint!"

There are three games annotated by Yermolinksy so as usual well worth a visit.

Peter Doggers report explains that "Board two was a quick draw; the second in a row for Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. He had his usual non-game with Teimour Radjabov yesterday (it's a "public secret" that these two friends always draw quickly with each other), and today he only played 14 moves to draw with Alexander Grischuk. "

The report also agree with Nick's assessment above that it was 65...f4 that was to blame in the Hou-Hammer game when Mr Hammer got a rush of blood and started playing for a win.

Finally, there is news of a simul by Kirsan! Well sort of, he played the first 40 minutes and then Motylev took over. It was a simul organized by the FIDE Commission Chess for the Disabled so kudos to FIDE for doing that.
