Anyone know why there are so many players 'not paired'? There seem to be 14 in round 8.

That often happens at Hastings. Juniors going back to school is one of the reasons it has more withdrawals than a typical tournament of its type.

3 of the byes are actually fillers who only played for 1 round but the software takes a flaky if they are permanently removed.
3 are students
3 or 4 are back tomorrow
At least 2 were illness.

We had a mere 91 players not paired for the last round here: http://chess-results.com/tnr251649.aspx ... ilen=99999

I disagree with Jack's calculation for Ravi's GM norm - 2234 tomorrow.
Total agreement with Jacks figures (except 1776 rather than anyone - but it's close to the same thing.

Hansen needs 1pt from his two games and a 2435 tomorrow (or 1.5 v 2030 or 2 v 1661) but he already has sufficient norms.

Thybo needs 2pts and a 2368 opponent

Vaishali needs 2 pts and a 2505 for a WGM
Can't Nino get an IM norm?

So has Ravi got an IM norm even if loses to Glenn Flear tomorrow or has he a chance of a GM norm?

Just a little further down Ollie Howell on 4.5/8 must be on for a big rating rise however he does tomorrow

He has an IM norm provided his opponent turns up to the game but can no longer get a GM norm as 2/2 was required.

I think Ollie was due to play someone who didn't turn up yesterday but is up 100 points anyway before the last round starts. He's playing off 1575 but due to results in December his Elo is actually 1668 so he's likely to be around and about 1800 when the next list comes out. His father, Chris, is a good friend of mine and said the problem has been that he was on the Elo list at 7 years old and its taking ages to catch up to his true grade which he reckons at the moment is around the 2000 mark. He looks better than that already as I mentioned to Chris who said that Ravi Haria previously had the same issues as well. Because Ollie is only on 1575 beating anyone over 1975 counts the same at the moment as a 1975 otherwise he would be up even more. Ollie is only 13 I think so he's got a k factor of 40 for quite a while so he's going to be very good indeed.

On the "Universal" rating list he's 1806 which would exclude Hastings. I don't know if the URS method does anything special for improving juniors. With a six year look back, results at the age of 7 would still be included for a 13 year old.

Norm Seeking Chances

Subject to confirmation

For IM norms the following results are needed

Ravi Haria needs to turn up (and 1 move each played for simplicity)
Mads Hansen needs a win
Nino Maisuridze needs a win
Jesper Thybo needs a win

Looking at Britton v Taylor before move 21, and having to smile at Chessbomb's instantaneous suggestion of 21.Ne3!

What happened on board 4

29. Bc1 was a god awful move; I suspect 29. f7 was close to winning (definitely a perpetual)

31. Qc3 from Flear was not a career highlight either ...

Hansen has won and Ravi and his opponent both appeared and made a move so Ravi has his second norm. Maisuradze looks bust against Bogdan and Thybo's game looks likely to be a draw.

I think there might need to be a product recall on cornflakes in the Hastings area after an impressively bloodthirsty final round!
