On move 28, Mickey pawn up as Black against Giri and looking good. https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... 2017/6/1/2

Two minutes after you posted that, I looked and the game was drawn. :(

Sorry about that Chris, it appears (from my limited understanding) that Mickey was concerned about the Bc5 possibility so played 30...Ra8 and once the b-pawn goes its a draw. However (have to admit with the aid of Deep Fritz 13) he could have played 30...Qc2 which stops the Bc5 threat and hangs on to the b-pawn indirectly (eg 1. Bxb5? Qb3 2. Bc5 Ra8 3. Qb6 Qc3) and this would have given him decent chances to continue playing for a win.

He might have also thought that Qb3 in your line could be answered by Qf4 and not seen that Qb4 is then strong. That said, he might have also calculated all these lines but concluded that his pieces were too tied up to have any serious winning chances.

One conclusion to draw from the first six rounds is to try and avoid having two knights against two bishops when playing Ding. Adams was wise enough to swap off both Ding's bishops in the first 18 moves :)

Svidler beat Harikrishna as well so after rd 6 the standings are:

1 Ding 4
2 Giri 3½
3 Svidler 3
4-6 Harikrishna, Yu, Adams 2½

Mickey lost to Harikrishna while the other two games were drawn so standings after rd 7 are not great viewing:

1 Ding 4½
2 Giri 4
3-4 Svidler, Harikrishna 3½
5 Yu 3
6 Adams 2½

Still time to recover (just). Hopefully he can. Losing to the same person twice isn't great. The Adams vs Harikrishna games were always likely to be critical.

He must be very frustrated. A pawn up today with winning chances, outplaying Ding without winning and even his loss came from a perfectly fine/slightly better position in the Catalan.

Oh dear. He was winning today, wasn't he? Pity.

Winning may be a bit strong. He was a pawn up but white did have some compensation with the bishop pair and Harikrishna did take risks to ensure that all three results remained possible whatever the objective assessment.

Isn't 35...Ne3 winning, or is the online computer engine failing to see things there?

It certainly looks promising although a pawn up isn't always decisive.

Svidler-Ding clocked off early.
