Standings after 7 rounds of the 45 mins + 30s stuff:
1-2 Nakamura, Nepomniachtchi 10
3 Anand 9
4-5 Kramnik, Svidler 8
6 Gelfand 5
7-8 Oparin, Pelletier 3

Next up the blitz which is really rapid which could be rated but it's not going to be or perhaps it is. Very creative these organisers. I believe next year they are going to introduce a blindfold segment where the players can see the board.

He has repeated this in the alleged blitz against Gelfand today.

How difficult it can be to try and defend r v r&b with only seconds on the clock has just been shown in Nepomniachtchi-Kramnik.

Nakamura wins after Nepo is never at the races against Oparin.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Final standings:

1 Nakamura 15 (21)
2 Nepomniachtchi 14
3 Anand 13½
4 Svidler 12
5 Kramnik 11
6 Gelfand 9
7 Oparin 5½
8 Pelletier 4

Bit surprised to be honest as I expected Nakamura to have a dip in form following the intense efforts at the US Championships that had barely finished before this one began. Guess he just loves to play.

I think the time controls suited him and gave him the edge over the rest of the field. There were several games that were level for much of the game but he always seemed to have extra time and create practical problems which his opponents couldn't cope with. That said, it was only a surprise loss to Oparin that stopped Nepo catching him in the last round.

Chess.com adding some drills to stop people losing this difficult ending.
