Tralee Classic

Post by Tim Harding » Thu Apr 13, 2017 2:28 pm

The Irish Chess Union has organised two small round-robin tournaments in Tralee, Co. Kerry, starting 6pm. One with GM norms, one with IM norms.
Their website says that chess24 will show the GM event live but it's not listed yet on chess24?

Round 1 pairings:
FM Charles Storey (ENG) - FM Carl Strugnell (Wales)
GM Vladislav Nevednichy (ROM) - IM Sam Collins (Ireland)
IM Lucas Van Foreest (NED) - GM Sebastien Feller (FRA; he of ill repute, now reinstated)
GM Matthew Turner (Scotland) - IM Hugo Ten Hertog (NED)
IM Yang-Fan Zhou (ENG) - IM Alex Astaneh Lopez (Ireland)

I will post a link this evening if I can find the games.

Round 1 in the IM event:
Killian Delaney v Henry Li (both Ireland)
IM Gavin Wall (IRL) v GM Miroslaw Grabarcyzk (POL)
FM Reinhold Mueller (Germany, but living here) v Alistair Hill (ENG)
FM Conor O’Donnell v FM Colm Daly (both Ireland)
GM Petr Neumann (CZE) v Conor E Murphy (ENG)

Friday, Saturday and Sunday rounds start at 10am and 4pm; Monday rounds somewhat earlier.

Standings after 7 (of 9) rounds: http://www.chess-results.com/tnr275063. ... =30&wi=821 I think the only norms that are still alive are Alex (needs 1.5/2 for a GM norm) and Carl (needs 2/2 for an IM norm).

Group B: http://www.chess-results.com/tnr275095. ... =30&wi=821 I think that Conor O'Donnell needs 2/2 for an IM norm.

Charlie Storey seems surprisingly cheerful about his 0 out of 9.

Fantastic performance from Carl Strugnell today, beating Sam Collins and Yang-Fan to secure his IM norm.

That's good (about Carl Strugnell's result, not Charles Storey's result!), but I can't see the results on chess-results.com. Do we have to wait for that to be updated to find out what the other results were? I was hoping to find out whether Matthew (Turner) had won the A section and whether Alex Astaneh Lopez had got a GM norm.

Final scores: Turner 6.5, Feller 6, Astaneh Lopez 5.5 (lost in last round when he needed to beat Turner);
Nevednichy & L. van Foreest 5; Ten Hertog and Strugnell 4.5 (IM norm for him indeed); Yang-Fan Zhou and Collins 4; Storey 0.

Substantial rating gain for Alex Lopez in his comeback event, I guess (but he's been playing a lot of rapid and blitz); disappointing for young Van Foreest who was well on target for his norm until he lost both games on Sunday; rating drops I guess for Yang-Fan and Sam Collins. Disaster for Storey whom, I gather, was delayed arriving and nearly lost round 1 by default.

No norms were achieved in the B (IM norm event) which was won by GM Grabarczyk with 7.5 ahead of GM Neuman 6.5. They were not very accommodating to norm-seekers it seems.

Perhaps, like me, he bought Jonathan Hawkins' book and is now looking forward to a refund?
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.
