Surprised to see the stat (in the Chessbase report) that Judit Polgar only once defeated a 2800+ player (Topalov) in classical chess.

So in that respect at least, Hou is now her equal ;)

There weren't many around (in her day) so I doubt she played many.

She played Gazza and Vlad quite a few times - no classical wins, though.

Yes there are some games but Kramnik was under 2800 far more than over until the last two years.

MVL down below 2800 as well https://www.chess.com/news/view/grenke- ... -2800-5413. The reason Carlson is wearing glasses is that he recently took a test, and "all sorts of things were wrong." He said that he has always been a little bit near-sighted, but was getting "some kind of headaches" recently. "I didn't really have a choice anymore." Fortunately for him that seemed to disract from his surprise draw with Bluebaum in rd 1.

It also occurred to me that if all 1202 participants were in one section in the Grenke Open there would be the theoretical possibility that you could get more than one person finishing on 9/9. Not good. I’m sure a calculation has been done before but it occurs to me, assuming my maths is up to it, that the maximum number of participants before such a calamity could arise is 1022 or 2 to the power of 10 - 2. If this is correct then for others it would be:
7 Rounds 254 (2 to the power of 8 - 2)
6 Rounds 126 (2 to the power of 7 - 2)
5 rounds 62 (2 to the power of 6 - 2)

Yes there were very few opportunities to defeat a 2800+. Also let's not to forget the moral victory against Kasparov when he took a move back.

In 1998 and 1999 she beat Vishy a couple of times in classical games when he was in the high 2700s. Allowing for rating inflation, that would be equivalent to a win against a 2800 player today.

Hou's advantage against Carlsen now up to +1.35 as the world champion's d6 pawn comes under heavy attack.

Massive historic upset now possible.....

And disappears, as Hou either loses her nerve, or the thread of the game.

An alternative, less pejorative comment, would be that Hou made a rational decision. There were promising lines but nothing clear, time pressure was approaching, and the draw leaves her on 2.5/3 with four rounds to go and having played the two highest rated opponentss.
