Yes, moves 35-37 were particularly problematic had black had time to find the right moves.

Rd 2 Results:
Jobava, B. (½) 2713 1 - 0 Short, N. D. (1) 2688
Grandelius (½) 2665 ½ - ½ Harika, D. (½) 2531
Blomqvist, E. (0) 2546 1 - 0 GM Eljanov, P. (½) 2755

Real shame about Nigel, but a short round of applause for Mr Blonqvist who has set a rather unusual record. No Swede has ever beaten a higher rated opponent than Eljanov at a standard time control.

Rd 3:
Short, N. D. (1) 2688 — Grandelius (1) 2665
Eljanov, P. (½) 2755 — Jobava, B. (1½) 2713
Harika, D. (1) 2531 — Blomqvist, E. (1) 2546

Harika has also made light of her double black as the bottom seed to hold Eljanov and have the better (including a couple of winning opportunities) of her game against Grandelius.

Though given that Ulf Andersson was the first player to beat Karpov after he became WC, that is rating inflation as much as anything ;)

I had a feeling the Milan game would come up. Ulf spent over an hour on moves 13-23 doing absolutely nothing and then proceeded to demolish the World Champion. Karpov was rated a lowly 2705 in 1975 and perhaps even more shocking was that Ulf Andersson was rated at only 2565.

That's an amazing stalemate trap near the end by Karpov, though.

It is claimed that Andersson didn't see it at the time, and when shown afterwards said it was a shame the game hadn't ended that way :)

Move 41 and Nigel is a pawn up with very decent chances of winning vs Grandelius. https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... 2017/3/1/2

Blomqvist is certainly in form at the moment and is winning vs Harika (again move 41) while Jobava is better vs Eljanov (move 39).

Update: Eljanov now better vs Jobava (move 45)

Jobava is better vs Eljanov (move 39).
But not after move 40, a draw looks the most likely now albeit white has an extra pawn to try with.

Same seems to apply to Nigel's game. Hope he can still win.

Could be leading to R+B v R.

Quite a miss.
