chess.com preview 29 May

Excellent line up, although anyone reaching the World Cup final will have to miss the event; £50K first prize no doubt accounts for the entries agin of the top 3 US players, plus MVL, Mickey Adams, Kramnik, Anand, Gelfand, Jobava and last year's winner Eljanov

Entries are basically closed now. Waiting list for players over 2000+.

Seems like an age ago I entered the 2014 isle of man masters event with very well known players, I am a 1461 fide rated patzer. I just wanted the experience of entering a top tournament with the famous players. I see they are limiting riff-raff like me these days.

Better go to Reykjavik then where the range of players goes from 2700+ to about 1100.

Mind you, with sterling behaving like the Incredible Shrinking Man, if you are a UK resident you might not be able to afford it.

it was like that at isle of man in 2014 their were players from 2736 to 1560 (my rating then which also has shrunk relentlessly like sterling), maybe my fide is linked to the pound lol...

no I have had the experience, stuck on an island with the cream of chessplayers from Europe, losing every game, total humiliation. never again.

Some of the games lasted about 3 hours or so and I nearly was a full piece up in one game but still 0/8 with the humiliation of a bye point sucks big time.

Good point. That was detailed here (back in June):

Good to see a competitive field at the IoM Masters become even more competitive.

It makes no comment on how players will be selected from the reserve lists if places become available. Picking the highest rated player on the list wouldn't be an unreasonable selection method.

Assuming they don't accelerate, Keith Arkell will miss out on Carlsen, but may well get a top 6 pairing. So that's where the lower half starts.

I had similar thoughts, until someone directed me to read page 3 of the Terms & Conditions.

IoM Masters Terms and Conditions wrote:
Swiss Pairing System, including a random draw for the first round pairings

The first round draw to determine pairings will be fully random, i.e. any player can be paired against any other player. The draw for the top seeds will be public. Lower seed pairings will be made at random by computer. This is a brief step-by-step process:

1. Number 1 seed draws manually for colour and his opponent is chosen by drawing a number from a bag.
2. The next highest seed still in the bag takes the opposite colour from the number 1 seed and draws a number from the bag, determining his opponent.
3. This process is repeated to produce the first 8 pairings. If a player draws their own number then it is put back into the bag and the player draws another number.
4. The process is handed over to the computer to produce the remaining pairings, with the stronger player in each fixture having the opposite colour to the stronger player on the board above.

As of round 2, pairings will be made according to the Dutch Swiss pairing system, using the most recent Swiss-Manager pairing program.
Top eight seeds (unless there are more later entries) are: Carlsen, Vachier-Lagrave, Kramnik, Caruana, Anand, So, Nakamura, Adams.

MVL and So are still in the World Cup. Both can still reach the final (they are in opposite halves of the draw).

Next two seeds are Gelfand and Eljanov.

Is this pairing method new, or was it done this way in previous years?
