Grand Chess Tour events: Paris GCT and Leuven, Belgium

Post by David Sedgwick » Wed Jun 21, 2017 7:56 am

This year's Grand Chess Tour is about to commence with the Paris GCT and Your Next Move, Leuven, Belgium, events.

Schedules:

Paris: Three Rapid games each day from Wednesday 21st June to Friday 23rd June and two Rapid Games each day on Saturday 24th June and Sunday 25th June.

Your Next Move: Three Rapid games each day from Wednesday 28th June to Friday 30th June and two Rapid Games each day on Saturday 1st July and Sunday 2nd July.

Play commences each day at 1300 BST except that on the last day in Paris the starting time is 1100. (The starting time on the last day in Leuven remains at 1300.)

The games in Paris will be broadcast live on DAILYMOTION and there will be a highlights programme each evening on CANAL + SPORT at 2230 BST. With the exception of Norway, I think that this is the first time for many years that a TV station in a West European nation has provided daily coverage of an international chess tournament.

If you're in Paris, you may wish to go and watch the games...

...but you can't.
The playing venue will not be open to the public this year
Also, it's a mucking-about-with-the-start-time tournament:

14.00 Round 1 Round 4 Round 7
15.30 Round 2 Round 5 Round 8
17.00 Round 3 Round 6 Round 9

Anybody know why?

[EDIT: no it isn't, I can't read a simple web page.]

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

It's a rapid play tournament, three rounds a day.

I too do not understand Justin's complaint about the schedule. Roger and Richard are correct.

Please note that Justin has quoted from the press release, which gives the round times in CEST. Play in the Rapid starts at 1300 BST, with the subsequent rounds at 1430 and 1600.

Ah, how stupid of me, my apologies for wasting everybody's time.

The link for DAILYMOTION is https://www.dailymotion.com/parisgrandchesstour. I have amended my original post.

The CANAL + SPORT programmes are only accessible in France.

Watch live from the GCT site. Scorching in Paris. Going to be scorching over the chess board.
Boiling in London. Have a cold pasta salad and iced drink and enjoy.
They ought to take their jackets off!

It looks to me as though they have.

The players are asked to wear their Grand Chess Tour jackets for the initial photographs. They are not expected to keep them on during play.

We so fortunate to have David ensuring the players are as comfortable as possible and posting here.
Even at Ascot yesterday men were allowed to take their jackets off.

Time for another cold refill before the time scrambles start!

Round 2 under way with Yasser Seirawan, Maurice Ashley, Jovanka Houska and co. commentating on chess24:
https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... 2017/2/1/1
Mamedyarov v Carlsen; Topalov v Caruana; So v Bacrot; Nakamura v Karjakin and MVL-Grischuk.

First round went:
Caruana 0 So 2 [two points at stake per game in rapid, one in blitz I assume?]
Nakamura 1 Mamedyarov 1
Bacrot 0 MVL 2
Karjakin 1 Topalov 1
Grischuk 1 Carlsen 1

So's resourcefulness shows as he enjoys another full point swing, this time against Bacrot.

Caruana lost another good position. Mamedyarov blundered against Magnus. MVL-Grischuk ended in a crazy draw. Nakamura also drew.

Round 3 at 4pm:
Grischuk (2) v So (4)
Carlsen (3) v MVL (3)
Caruana (0) v Nakamura (2)
Karjakin (2) v Mamedyarov (1)
Bacrot (0) v Topalov (3)
