Reluctantly (no, eagerly) turning to the chess ...

COME ON JOBAVA!!

(Encouragement much needed because objectvely this is probably the match where the higher rated player is most likely to win without getting to tie breaks).

Also

COME ON VASSILY!

(Encouragement much needed because Giri probably still has three lives left).

Finally,

COME ON, DUBOV and ARONIAN

(meaning that it should be a good match).

The ECF appear to have dropped it for the British Championships, or at least there was nothing in the entry conditions. That saves the bother of trying to enforce one.

Dress codes remind me of petulant teachers sending pupils home for the wrong colour socks. That's a reliable newspaper standby story which the teaching profession rarely fails to delivers.

I'm not a big one for arbitrary rules myself, but if organisers and sponsors don't want the players they are paying to look as though they've slept in a dustbin I think they have the right to put something in the regulations about that.
If you want a picture of the future, imagine a QR code stamped on a human face — forever.

I see people are still a wee bitty upset over the use of the word 'Gypsy'.

If that's all they have to worry and get het up about then I envy them.
(to be honest, actually I don't. )

There are number of quick replies Anton could have snapped back.

"But I am a Gypsy!"

"They are my normal trousers but they shrunk in the wash."

"I thought today was chess-boxing."

Maybe the lad is not as use to getting insulted as I am.
(and BTW being told I look like a gypsy is way way way down on the list. It's a joke.

So I cannot jump on the goody-two shoes band wagon for that one.

But I will for inconsistency. I was watching the 3rd round play off's.
One of the cameramen was wearing shorts and so was this guy.

Nothing was done. Where was Zurab Azmaiprashvili?
Did someone not tell him gypsies have invaded the playing hall.

This is about the 3rd or 4th time 'dress code' has recently come up.
Something needs to go down in black and white else it will keep cropping up.

Stewart, sorry to keep dragging you into these 'debates' but nip around to your
local casino, obtain a list of their dress code and drop it on the FIDE table.

Anyway, it's all good fun and once again chess is in the media for all the right reasons.
Grandmasters punch ups, cheating, dress code.....arbiters fighting with the Spanish Police.

Shame there’s no "Eileen" playing. But seriously folks, we’re all Vassily fans aren’t we?

Regarding the openings, the Petrov seems to be back in fashion. I’m somewhat out of date on the theory but I thought it was supposed to be slightly tricky for Black because of the line that So is playing.

In other news Rapport seemed to be attempting (or at least offering) the early threefold in the Exchange Slav but Najer wasn’t having it.

Did he actually say that? Zurab is certainly one of the few FIDE officials whom I have never seen looking remotely smart.
Yes, in his video interview in English so I'm not relying on "Google Translate"

The other four matches not mentioned: Rodshtein-Fedoseev (sounds like Fedoseev is a dark horse to win the tournament?); Svidler-Bu (torn between wanting to see Svidler keep up his impressive record, and for Carlsen's conquerer to continue to sweep all before him); MVL-Grischuk (happy to see either win here); Wang Hao-Ding Liren (er, going for the younger player Ding Liren).

Just one player born in 1990. Leonard must be shocked!

Judging by the position that Jobava got, Wesley’s likely to be the second contender in a row to fire me from their theoretical team.

Well, for me the trouble for Jobava is when he plays White!

Incidentally, did anyone get to the last 16 by winning all three matches in regular time?

Of course if you translate that name literally into English you get something pretty offensive. In 90's France nobody I asked found the French term offensive in the slightest
Ah yes.
In Flanders, the confection is known as Negerinnetetten. The word can either be translated as "negress's tits" [42] or could originate from the French word for head: "tête", as the French word for this confection used to be tête de nègre, which is French for "negro's head". This is also the probable origin of an alternative name Negertetten. Nowadays manufacturers market the confection under a different name, as the aforementioned terms are considered to be offensive.
Or indeed
France's pastry tradition has long fostered dubious pastry names, like the now-outlawed "tête-de-nègre" [n*****'s head], a chocolate-covered marshmallow, which is known in the US as a whippet.

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Anyway, I've only just got in. Running through the scores on Chess24 it seems that Aronian missed a win late on and that Grischuk might have done the same while under attack from MVL, yes?

Fedoseev's winning idea is very nice indeed.
