That is an excellent point, which I had overlooked. Were they, like so many talented physicists, pulled away by the banking industry in the early 2000s to develop its weapons of mass financial destruction?

Well we have our own Luke McShane as evidence there, and there are certainly others.

You have to be careful with statistics, since by definition unlikely things do happen, but this still seems to point to some kind of a missing generation.
WTF?
5 years is a generation? Is that 5 human years or 5 dog years?
I think you need to be a
lot more careful with statistics.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

I did consider using the word "cohort" instead but decided that only a pointless pedant would have trouble with the more common term. I also guessed there would be one.

It's a good day for the tournament. Some great positions in play right now.

Aronian seems to have gone badly awry.

So-Anand drawn and with Aronian in trouble there's a chance for MVL to take first outright from what looks a promising position.

There are more rules for the tie-break system than there are moves in chess I think

Looks like (contrary to my prediction) MVL really ought to win this tonight.
If results go as expected, the US players will take three of the last four places.

Following their Millennials collapse, not much to cheer about in St Louis.

Surprising that going into this tournament MVL was World number 8 and So number 2 and now the positions are
reversed. More bad news for So as he falls behind Kramnik and Caruana on rating in the
Candidates Race.
