Re: 5th Sinquefield Cup 2-12 August 2017
Think some of the move numbers may be incorrect in the analysis above.
As Loz says 41 Kg5! was missed by Carlsen who expected 41...Ke5. Though I did note that Carlsen's move 41 Rb6+ is Stockfish's no 1 choice and 41 Kg5 isn't amoung the top three moves. Carlsen "I just intuitively felt he should have enough counterplay and then I went on to look at other variations. The problem was that I thought at that point that it should be winning anyway and that there was no reason to rush."
The Peter Doggers article shows it was 43 g5? when Carlsen could have played 43 h5! Carlsen ""I knew that 43.g5 was a bad move but somehow I did it anyway. To have some chances I need to preserve h5 but I thought I'll somehow to manage to make progress but there was just wasn't anything. That wasn't any good."
The analysis of his game vs Aronian shows Wesley So appearing to have lost a lot of confidence for whatever reason. The defeat takes so below 2800 (now down to World number 6) and Aronian over it (now World number 4). It's also a significant result as it improves Kramnik's chances of qualifying for the Candidates on rating.

I'm sure we all know that feeling well enough. Nice to hear it happens to good players.Chris Rice wrote: Carlsen "I knew that 43.g5 was a bad move but somehow I did it anyway."

Anand has beaten Nepomniachtchi to move to 4.5/7.

What a grim performance that was from Nepo.

Not sure 27...Ne4 was that clever either but anyway, I don't think a position of that kind should fall to bits so quickly and easily at this level.

Agreed, that seemed to be the first step in the wrong direction.JustinHorton wrote:Not sure 27...Ne4 was that clever either but anyway, I don't think a position of that kind should fall to bits so quickly and easily and this level.

MVL-Karjakin drew a very odd Berlin ending whilst Svidler-Carlsen was drawn. Nakamura-Aronian is still in the middlegame.

Karjakin must have missed a win somewhere there?
Meanwhile, Carlsen ended up with a drawn Rook ending a pawn up yet again......

I don't think so. Judging by the clock times MVL has seen most (all?) of it before but Karjakin had to find the moves on his own. One pitfall for black appeared to be 29....a3 30 e6 f6 31 Kg7 a2 32 Kf7 Nd5 33 c4 a1(Q) 34 cd Qa8 35 Bh4 and suddenly white is winning.Matt Mackenzie wrote:Karjakin must have missed a win somewhere there?

Unlike yesterday the Carlsen ending looked to be a draw albeit worth playing on just in case.

40...Rxf3 wasn't so great though. I can understand in some ways why Aronian played this instead of 40...Bg2+, but it feels like he bottled out of the logical conclusion to the combination he started with 33...Nxf3.PeterFarr wrote:33 ..
