A surprise, I thought their plan was to have Mamedyarov, Karjakin & Nepo white in the big matches and Kramnik, Grischuk, Giri black. Possibly playing Mamedov didn't appeal.

After four draws in the top match boards 1 & 2 have burst into life in the time scrambles.

3Cs are 2-1 ahead and White Rose have already won their match, currently 3.5-0.5 ahead.

At move 41 it's fair to say the positions haven't gone the way the top seeds were hoping.

Van de Griendt on Board 2 for White Rose had a completely crazy game. Absolutely dead lost at one point being a whole Rook down but Black managed to get all of his pieces on bad squares leaving his King and a couple of pawns to fight against a White Rook, Bishop and Knight. Then around the time control, Van de Griendt (in some time trouble) managed to find a three fold repetition with a Nf5 to g7 and back to f5.

Then at some point in thinking what a genius I am for saving this, he realised with the N on f5, Be2 actually wins. Unfortunately, with his N on g7, he has to start this idea with 41 Nf5 again. At this point, his opponent (and bear in mind that they are past the time control) should simply claim three fold repetition with 41 .. Kh5 and he thought for about ten minutes for no reason that I can discern and then played Kh5 on the board! Now 42 Be2 wins after 42 .. Kg6 43 Nh4 ch but ChessBomb at least is showing this as a draw.

Or perhaps he did claim the draw after Kh5 and the remaining moves weren't played on the board - that might make more sense.

From what I've heard he wrote down the move and claimed the draw, but it took a while to find an arbiter to confirm it.

Thanks Nick. A game to encourage all of us and, in some ways, what chess is all about - a great fight.

Kramnik managed to draw but Grischuk looks like he's losing to Mamedov which would give Odlar Yurdu a 3.5-2.5 victory and leave them as the only team on 100% and two points clear of the field. They also lead in the women's event although possibly only jointly.

They'll be singing in the streets of Odlar Yurdu tonight - with apologies to all who have done this joke before.

They may not be singing anymore as Grischuk may now escape with a draw.

Yes, Grischuk saves so 3-3 and these two teams on 9 points with (I think) four others on 8.

Globus, a team which could almost play in any order, seem to play as one in all sorts of respects. They seem either all to win or all to draw each day.

Setbacks for the English teams, though again 3Cs had some bright spots. Most of them seem to have had some good results, and playing Ashton and Quillan on boards 3 and 4 seems to have been a well judged decision. But as ever, how well the event will be remembered in competitive terms is likely disproportionately to depend on the last round.
