Tata Steel 2018

Post by Tim Harding » Fri Jan 12, 2018 9:32 pm

Play in the 2018 Tata Steel starts tomorrow afternoon at Wijk aan Zee. The round 1 draw is up.

Gawain Jones has White against Sergei Karjakin; I am sure all Forumites wish him all the best of luck and great games in this major event to celebrate his recent 30th birthday.

Other first round games in the Masters:
Magnus Carlsen v Fabiano Caruana (!)
Anish Giri v Hou Yifan
Vladimir Kramnik v Wei Yi
Peter Svidler v Adhiban
Vishy Anand v Matlakov
Wesley So v Mamedyarov

I gather that Loek van Wely declined his usual invitation.
Chess24 commentators, for this round at least, are announced as Robin Van Kampen and Yasser Seirawan.

Pairings for the Challengers can be seen at https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-tourn ... 2018/1/1/1.
The Van Foreest brothers play in round one, presumably a forced pairing?

I started a new thread for this because the old one was nowhere near the top of the list when I was writing, then somebody else posted.

Can the moderator please merge so we don't have rival threads, thanks?

And they're off! Gawain played the Italian against Karjakin, the old line with 5 d4 and 7 Bd2, effectively offering the well-known draw which was declined after one repetition. No novelty yet though Karjakin had a long think on move 14. Gawain has just played 15 (13) Ne4 instead of the standard 15 a4.

Carlsen-Caruana is a Petroff.

Giri v Hou looked dead drawn last time I looked, but Q endings are tricky!
