Just looked at the schedule. I assume that it's 15.00 local time that Jovanka's game starts, so (pardon my ignorance) what time is that for us?

They are GMT+2, so 3:00pm = 1:00pm in the UK:

I have heard unofficially that Iweta Rajlich is not turning up and so Jovanka is straight through to the second round. Currently seeking confirmation...

That is correct, I had an e-mail from Jovanka yesterday evening which said that was the case. Apparently Rajlich had travel problems due to the weather conditions.

I'm hesitant to say or Melissa given that the rating gap between Jovanka's two possible opponents is bigger than between me and Anand, Carlsen, Aronian etc

The live games are very slow to load but Koneru has duly won game 1 of her two game match with Black, scoring nicely against White's King's Indian Attack by keeping her BK at e8, countering White's Bg5 try for dark square B exchange by Bf8, then breaking through on the b file. She's in impressive form following on from her top score in the Snowdrops v Old Stagers match in Marienbad, and Jovanka will need both skill and fortune to have a chance against her.

Almost all first day games now completed, with no serious upsets. My money for the first possible early banana skin would be on the probable round 2 pairing of Natalia Zhukova (wife of Alexander Grischuk and scorer of a stunning performance in Gibraltar) against Hou Yifan.

I wasn't that impressed by Koneru today. I didn't think she played the opening very accurately and later on I thought she gave her opponent a chance. 22. Nxd5 just seems to be very good for White. Jovanka will have some extra time to prepare and I think she has a very decent chance.

I agree. She may be the underdog but she is known to perform better against high rated players and can prove very hard to beat. It's clear a very difficult pairing but the extra days off have given her time to prepare and settle in without the stress of a hard fought first match.

There seem to be a few surprise results, notably on boards 23, 24 and 26 with one or two slightly surprising draws higher up where the stronger player was white. The two game knockout tournaments certainly create a lot of extra tension and pressure so a lot of the matches will come down to who best holds their nerve.
