Phew!
Do we know who won?
Middlesex won 38-37 on board count. The “phew!” is additionally explained by boards 2 and 15 being the last two to finish…

The Surrey board 15 seemed to take great risks trying to win with Q vs NB+pawns and lost, but presumably he thought his board 2 was losing so he needed to win. As it happened bd 2 was drawn so a draw would have won the match for Surrey.

"Is that the Peter Lee on board 1 in the Open - British Champion as long ago as 1965."

I played him at the Basman Memorial, just after having a long and interesting chat with him between rounds. He said he hadn't played for ages, but he obviously got the taste for it again.

Would he fancy a go at the British Over 65s? The only "class" player entered so far this year is Terry Chapman.

Interestingly enough, exactly six years ago today, one of those players was the last board to finish in a match decided on board count, but that time with a different result (both as an individual and for the team).

Am I going to have to try and work out which match that was in the 2016/17 County Championships?

Was it the U180 final between Devon and Middlesex?

I see you drew your game in that match, Richard. :-)

Is it the result on board 7 you are talking about here?

You then proceeded to work it out anyway. Yes I drew my game, to keep up my run in County Championship finals of drawing my game while being on the losing side (3 for 3). I was quite a late addition and, as you can see by one of the links you posted, I had been so inactive I only had one grade.

That looks to me like a game where resignation was anything but premature.

Anyone know if the National Stages were FIDE rated?

If you look up yourself and Peter Lee, neither of you feature with a county championship game.

I don't know if it was intended that the National Stages should be rated, but it hasn't happened.

It was advertised by the ECF as FIDE rated

The semi finals were

The Rating report on the FIDE website for the final seems to show 12 players each having drawn

Ok, thanks Mick. So all the wins not submitted or missed out for some reason. Not just that Peter hadn’t played a rated game since the 1960s and FIDE didn’t believe he was the same person 😂

semi-final 1

semi-final 2 which I can see has a mistake, with "Adams Tytons" rather than "Adam Tyton" and may have a couple of players missing match card

Final
