I was about to suggest 1.Ng5, but even then, White wins the f4 pawn and should have drawing chances if the three passed pawns start rolling. There is nearly a helpmate, but the knight has to end up on d3. I think it starts with White playing Kd4, intending to roll the e-pawn and ends up with a bishop check on f6 doing something nasty after the knight goes AWOL somewhere else.

Both players have about 5 minutes at this stage. Black has a Black squared Bishop, so White pieces will be safe if they stay on White squares

I think we just ran out of time and lost...

How about:

1. Kd4 Be1 2. Nf6 Kb4 3. d7 Bc3+

That is one way to lose for White... (though actually, White might still be winning that)

EDIT: OK, I give up. See what others can come up with.

OK, he we go then

Nh7-f5! Bd8
Ke5-e6 Kc5
Ke6-e5 (triangulation?) b5
Kxf4 b4
e5 b3
Ne3 (not quite quick enough) b2
Ke4 b1(Q)+
Kf4 Qg6
Nf5 Qg5+
Ke4 Qg2
Ne3 Qg6+
Kf4 Bg5+
Kg3 Bxe3+

There was another 30 or so moves and the White King got mated on b8

Nh7 to f5??? And those watching had to strive mightily not to say anything, I suppose.

I should just say that the Somerset player is a tremendous bloke and an excellent team player. We have all done silly things under pressure; I am having a laugh at the circumstances and not the players.

Formal results flooding in:

Minor: Leicestershire beat Essex 9-7 (wins for Hebden and Clarke on 1 and 2; everything else drawn!)
U160: Greater Manchester beat Hertfordshire 10-6

If I may move on from the Somerset v Middlesex saga:
Christopher Kreuzer wrote:So unofficially, the line-up so far in the finals is:

Open: Surrey-Middlesex
Minor: Leicestershire-Herts/Hants
U180: Yorkshire-Middlesex
U160: Greater Manchester-Yorkshire
U140: Herts-Lancs/Surrey
U120: Herts/Lancs-Warks/Essex
U100: Essex-Kent

Could still have 10 of the 14 finals places filled by SCCU teams...
In the U120 Division, the SCCU website has Warwickshire 4-8 Essex.

I can report that Lancashire beat Surrey in the U140 Division, but I have no details.

So, with two match results outstanding, we're down to a maximum of 9 SCCU teams in the Finals (7 definite and 2 more possible).

The U160 Division is one in which the SCCU often seems to do badly, although 2011 was an exception.

U100: Kent beat Nottinghamshire 6-6 (23-39 on board count)

U100 Final: Essex v Kent

Contrasting fortunes for the two finalists so far in the national stage: Kent won both national matches on board count. Essex won both national matches by default.
On the SCCU Forum, I described this curiosity as both teams reaching the Final without winning a match, but in two completely different ways.

Matthew

Clearly, after Black plays b3, your guy missed Nd3 and if b2, the N blockades on b1!!

I am told that in the Minor, Herts beat Hants 9-7.

I have to say that the player in questions was myself!!!!

I could have won the game earlier during the first blitz period before the first time control but didn't (God knows why!!!). Didn't see a simple exchange win!!! *doh*

White: Na6, Nc4, Rc1, Re1, Kg2, b5, d5, e4, f3, g3, h3
Black: Ne7, Bc5, Ra8, Rh8, Kd7, d6, e5, f5, g5, g7, b6

Black had just played 35...Ra8(?)

I had a look at the game this morning and I had several chances. My opponent defended reasonably well and until I had about 2-3 minutes left on the clock I played well enough to win the game.

Earlier during the match our Team captain told me I needed a win as it looked that way to advance to the next round. That was obviously fine by me but in the end I "only" needed a draw as one of my team mates managed a draw instead of losing!!!

On the other hand I think that Somerset had a tremendous run in the CC!!!

The day was slightly saved by Germany winning against Portugal!!!
