I don't know who has written that (all I know is that it was bought over the net for international chess club); but it seems to mean a passed pawn here.
So does freeing a pawn differ here from creating a free pawn?

Does
he have all the files open to launch an attack
means he opened them himself, or simply that he has the possession of open file?

He must have opened them himself, unless it was a consultation game.

What does "Make" mean in:
The Proprietors hereby warrant to the Publishers that they have full power to make this
Agreement and confirm that they are acting as Agents on behalf of the Author

In that sentence, make means create.

He's using the descriptive present tense. A reasonable explanation is here:-

He could have said, A better move is 4.Ke2 or A better move was 4.Ke2. The meaning would have been the same.

What's the difference between "having an extra pawn" and "being a pawn up"?
Is it possible that "having ab extra pawn" hints at material count?

What's the difference between
Everything about him denoted power rather than grace, strength rather than beauty.
and
Everything about him denoted power rather than grace and strength rather than beauty.
?What does the first version mean in the first place? Why is the comma used?

So that the reader doesn't parse it as "power rather than grace and strength". The aim is to clearly establish that "grace" is part of the first comparison, while "strength" is part of the second.
