ENG vs IRA

Post by John Upham » Mon Nov 21, 2022 1:13 pm

Flitting around social media I've noticed a number of references to

ENG vs IRA

Has there been "trouble at mill" that I have missed?

Probably people following the World Cup who don't realize that Iran's official abbreviation is IRI.

In the chess world yes, but the BBC gave it as IRN.

Someone once, ChessBase perhaps, did an article about the top 10 headcount of FIDE rated players and assumed IRI was the Republic of Ireland.

Sounds like they should change it to IRN officially - IRI doesn't really make sense when there is no second 'I' in the name and county abbreviations are always made up of existing letters.
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

IRI stands for "Islamic Republic of Iran" (for better or worse).

Hopefully we can indeed change it soon, then.

May I take the liberty of mentioning the following thread on Twitter:

It contains another excellent interview with Shohreh Bayat (the latest of many) and my own comments on today's events.
