Asked to pay a fine of £0 by DVLA

Post by John Upham » Thu Sep 01, 2011 3:07 pm

I have been asked to pay a fine of £0.00 on a 1970 TVR which I had omitted to obtain a current Tax disc for.

The vehicle is historic (rather like its owner) and therefore exempt.

The fine of £0.00 covers a period of two months!

Who should I complain to?

You could send them a cheque for £0.

I was minded to do it via a BACS transfer or postal order. I guess a PO for £0 would cost more.

Just make sure you date it 0/0/0000.

This must be a bad joke by someone in the DVLA or a really funny blunder by their systems programmer. It harks back to
the early days (1950s and '60s) of electronic automation of billing and records with those large scale computers that used
reels of tape. Unless you find someone with some common sense in the DVLA, you might well have to go through with the
payment of the zero amount like some people had to do in the old days!

Going slightly off-topic, what is the rationale behind not paying road tax on an older vehicle?

I wasn't given a choice. I was forced not to pay. Appropriate vehicles registered prior to 1974 are designated as being "Historic Vehicles" and are therefore exempt.

It has done around 300 miles in four years.

I meant, why would older vehicles be exempt? Is it ebcause they won't do much mileage?
