What about 'moving the pieces about'(in the postmortem, as opposed to the OTB game)

Re: Breathing room

Its just a more expressive way of saying much the same thing.

In a cramped situation (IRL as well as the chessboard) you don't have that much "room to breathe" - rooks with lots of space are the opposite of that.

Hi.
Any difference between 'lead in development' and 'advantage in development'?

Thanks in advance

No, a lead is an advantage.

Pedantically perhaps, with lead being just having more pieces out (numerically) while an advantage might have them on much more useful squares than the opponent or some such.

Again, different ways of saying basically the same thing. Ever thought of investing in a theasaurus??

extra

Post by soheil_hooshdaran » Sun Jun 15, 2014 8:37 am

Hi.
What does 'extra' mean in
[1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc4 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e3 O-O 6.Nf3 Nbd7 7.Rc1 c6 8.Bd3
............
With this space count, we have confirmed,- that White has more territory than Black. Because of Black's lack of breathing room, Black is unable to move his Rooks to useful files, and his Bishop on c8 is completely blocked. Obviously. Black must do something about this undesirable state of affairs,
Fortunately for Black, Capablanca gave this position some attention many years ago and came up with a solution. His reasoning went something like this: Because Black's position is cramped, he must initiate a series of trades to give himself more room to move. Then Black must stake a bigger claim in the center and advance either his c5- or c6-pawn, challenging White's central position and striking out for still more space.
Black has no choice but to try this tactic:
8. … dxc4!
The first trade.
9. Bxc4 Nd5!
More trades. White's g5—Bishop cannot avoid being traded.
10. Bxe7 Qxe7]
You can see that Black already has extra elbow room.

Thanks a million in advance

powers

Post by soheil_hooshdaran » Sun Jun 15, 2014 9:49 am

Hi.
Play over this example several times, trying to get a feel for the space—giving powers of a trade.
What are 'the space—giving powers[not just 1 power/capability] of a trade'?

Thanks in advance

Extra here means More than he had before. Extra is not a chess term, and the definition can be found in any dictionary.

But there are 3 senses for this word in a common dictionary
