Why not avoid the problem altogether, as some authorities already do, by instead calling it the Spanish Opening?

Because its name is the Ruy Lopez!!
We should honour the great chess pioneers of the past and the man deserves an opening named after him. (Ok he wasn't that particularly sold on his own opening - but time has sanctified the name)
