Chess in Afghanistan?

Post by Tim Harding » Thu Feb 26, 2015 2:33 pm

Today Afghanistan beat Scotland in the Cricket World Cup.
Look at the table after three matches in pool A:

Afghanistan are ahead of England too! How long before we see an Afghani IM?

In the FIDE ratings, Afghanistan have 111 entries but the majority don't have ratings yet. Some have FM, IA or CM titles. A few are female.

They don't have a player above 2200 yet. Are any of them living in Britain or major chess-playing countries?

One of my opponents in the Turin Open of 2006 was playing under AFG.

His FIDE rating record now shows him as playing in Canada.

Around 2000 strength.

In 2006 we hosted the National Junior Squad Championships at Millfield. It isn't that easy to get to Millfield so I ended up collecting people from various different train stations. Hamidullah Sarwary, on the other hand, just rocked up at the school having researched the Bristol to Street bus service (changing at Wells, obviously) from Kabul - not bad for a 17 year old.
