All of them? You would like to think there would be one club in the county where the captain acts in a rational manner - have you checked?

No, just the captains in my club - I'm sure they would argue it's the only objectively fair way of selecting a team, and I might agree if I wasn't in this ridiculous situation.

I could offer my services to another club, but that will come with a slice of drama that I'm not particularly interested in. I just want to play chess

We are probably coming at this from two different points of view here, but I say just enjoy it - play a bunch of rapid tournaments and shark the intermediate section for 6 months Your rating will soon go up and you'll have some fun.

I personally don't take rapid seriously in the league, but I can see your problem is an irritating one if you do.
