Adjournment is when the game hasn't finished in the time allowed for the "venue" usually. It is then continued at a later date.
Adjudication is when the game is sent off to a third party to be analysed and a decision made on the outcome of the game. The reasons for doing so are more lengthy and varied.

Am I being simple here but don't you do one of 2 things; use shorter times or move venue.

Hah. If it were that simple there'd be no discussion...

Your probably right. I don't understand these high end rules, but it should always be rated. I am sure of that.

There are always potentially things to go wrong causing extra time to be needed, and venues for chess clubs are hard enough to come across these days as it is, there are hardly any ideal venues I've visited playing league chess. I think cost must be the biggest issue, as some venues demand large fees, and we pay enough in game fees etc. as it is...
To Drink or not to Drink, that is the question.

I Drink therefore I am.

I'm not as think as you drunk I am.

Do know about cost. I've used 6 different venues and never payed a penny. A venue that costs means the team don't drink there, as a team we all drink and socialise in our venue on other days than team night. They must make a shed load out of us. But it works.

Then you've been very lucky, but not all clubs are...

Even if cost was no option, how many venues have you ever come across that are IDEAL for chess? Pubs are not ideal, there is a noise factor, space isalso a factor in places, temerature, how busy the surrounding area is etc., lighting, opening and closing times, and other things as well.

Adjourned games should still be graded in this day and age when these problems are still around, because they can affect the actual match.

Venues are tricky, but keep looking, I believe we (the BDCA) are going to hold a whole divisions evening league events (14 matches between me and you) in one venue to help on the cost front.

I agree about adjourned games. It has to be, Correspondance Chess still exists in this day of Fritz and his friends.

I've tried it, but I can't be bothered with the potential waiting times for your next move, and the possibility of cheating is too great for me to want to suffer at the end of it. :)

I recall you saying you have 3 PC's, well I have 2 laptops and a Desktop, and we could easily use one to play on RHP, and another to use the latest version of Fritz etc...

I played my first game in the Surrey League last night and much to my team mates amusement was presented with the following options by my opponent :
Would you like an adjournment or an adjudication?

After a brief period of disbelief at not having a sensible option I replied that neither option was acceptable and was there a third?

My opponent appeared somewhat taken aback and said that there was a third option of a QPF but that he was not obliged to offer it to me!

I remained calm and choose adjournment...

Ho hum!
