Funnily enough I would. In the summer, we actually have events 'ere up north exactly as you suggest. 4 a side, play the same opponent twice, 30 mins for all moves each game. Means you're finished by 9.30 so plenty of time for beer, and you even get a convenient break between games to re-fill your glass!

But I am against adjudication under any circumstances. Would we allow someone to sit there with Fritz or the MCO and bash out 15 moves of the latest theory? No! So why do we allow the equivalent at the end of a game? We should try to make playing sessions as long as is possible, but IMO the game should be completed in the time available. You only get into a blitz finish if you take too long earlier on!

You may be interested that I was just given a copy of the 100 Years of Leicestershire Chess Club book written in 1960 by Don Gould. The club used to meet from 6pm - 11pm twice a week at the outset. Try doing that these days!!
