Too many D and E grades, which are statistically very dubious. That's not to count people who don't appear on the list at all because they don't play enough. OK, so i admit i'm only focussing on the top players and don't know about the rest of the list. I don't think people pay enough attention to what the different categories of grades mean and tend to treat all grades as of equal value, which they aren't.Richard Haddrell wrote:How so?Richard Bates wrote:Doesn't everyone know that the Rapidplay list is a bit of a joke?
Top 100:
Standard play has 6D, 8E, Rapidplay has 39D, 25E.

Richard
I think congress organisers would tell you that strong players prefer long-play and weaker players rapidplay (based on numbers of tournament entries in different sections)
Hence if you think the grading list is a joke for strong players in rapid (because they play too few games) the same would apply to weaker players in the main list

Just to put the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons : could you imagine a time when the preferred model of playing evening league chess was by a pair of rapid-play games where a pair of players had two games with each other with say a 15 minute intermission for socialising etc?
Is there a fundamental tenet that requires us to play one standard-play game (maybe the colours were decided by tossing or they were pre-determined on a home/away basis) with the game ending in an unpleasant time scramble or a civilised incremental finish?
Is this prospect a total non-goer?

We already have this format in Leicestershire for our Summer Team competitions.John Upham wrote:Just to put the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons : could you imagine a time when the preferred model of playing evening league chess was by a pair of rapid-play games where a pair of players had two games with each other with say a 15 minute intermission for socialising etc?

There's a London Rapidplay League that runs to this format. The idea has been tentatively suggested as a summer competition around here by one or two people. I certainly think it's worth trying.John Upham wrote:Just to put the proverbial cat amongst the pigeons : could you imagine a time when the preferred model of playing evening league chess was by a pair of rapid-play games where a pair of players had two games with each other with say a 15 minute intermission for socialising etc?
