Last year's winner appears for the first time in the ECF's published July 2015 list

By contrast Chelsie Sihite, who only played in the 2012-13 Hastings appears in the January 2013 list

It makes sense to treat Hastings as the first event of the new grading half year, as it means there isn't a need to wait for it to finish and be submitted before getting end of period grading processing under way.
I stand corrected!

I am particularly intrigued by Hetton Lyons new player, George Whitfield, who comes in with a first time grading of 151 based on 6 wins from 6 games. Does anybody know him? In particular, is he in his 70's?

I ask because in the early 1970's the master in charge of the school chess club at Bede school, Sunderland, and second in charge of the maths department was one George E Whitfield. He was also board 1 or 2 for Sunderld NALGO chess club with a BCF grading in the 180's.

Actually, while I'm looking at the Hetton Lyons players there is Tony Mezzo! He must be about 80. He was a team mate for Sunderland YMCA 2 in about 1971 or 2 when he must have been about 140 BCF.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

For your FIDE rating yes, for your English grade no. You would be treated in the same way as a player new to English chess. You would need 5 games for an "F" grade and 9 for an "E" grade.

You might find your very old grade being used as an initial estimate, for board orders, seeded pairings, tournament eligibility etc.

I presume these database entries are yours.

Yes Roger, that's me. I expect a large decline in year 1. Whenever that is.

The effects of the regrading should cushion that to a fair degree :)

That wasn't really meant to affect the higher grades so much, but they're creeping on upwards. 200 very definitely isn't quite what it was any more, and even 210 seems a bit easier to reach.

Although, interestingly, lots of the 'old money' 200s are still around that level - it seems that in a lot of cases they were not really that much better but just able to live in a protected bubble, playing against each other on top boards. Now there are a new crop of 200s who are competing strongly against the old guard who they would never have had opportunity to face in the past, just proving the point of how necessary the deflation fix was.

If only fide could learn from the lesson of the ecf....
Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

It could have been worse, after a string of pretty good results I allowed the very pleasant, but decidedly modest graded Margaret Rowley from Harrogate CC to get a draw out of me in the Yorkshire league - I bit her hand off for that too as it was a lost ending for me
Margaret was of course a much stronger player back in the day and when she finds her form it is pretty crushing. Our competitive chess history dates back twenty years and I've only ever beaten her twice.
Hi Andrew, Yeah I got the feeling she was some sort of champ back in the day, she does know what she's doing. I've played her several times, I've beaten her once but the rest have been draws :) I liked to think I'd improved enough to get the full point out of her now, but not this time!
