I have finally been persuaded to get an Iphone. I wondered if anyone had any chess apps which they could recommend?

I have only used the Chess at ICC application for http://www.chessclub.com which was usable but somewhat hard work on the small screen every so often

Now my free trial has run out I have not renewed however

BCM will be conducting an in-depth review in our April issue.

Right here, right now I'd recommend as standing out

e+chess http://itunes.apple.com/app/e-chess/id475177331?ls

Everyman View http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/chess-viewer/id410841427

SmartChess http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/smartchess!/id465524032

plus, off course apps from ChessBase and ICC.

but there are many more and, hopefully, one more before too long! :D

I like Stockfish on the iPhone, which I think I heard about from the forum a while back. Straightforward to use and play, set up positions, export pgn etc. I think it was free when I downloaded it.

Will now take a look at John's suggestions. (Still waiting to hear of the killer app that makes an iPad worth getting.)

Most of these are lovely pgn viewers, and there are more out there. What would be a killer app for me, and would certainly cause me to rush out and buy an iPad, would be a Tournament Director app - something with which I could run events under ECF or FIDE pairings rules, and publish to the internet directly. I would happily work with someone to make this happen!

That is completely contrary to some opinions expressed elsewhere... ;-)

Some might suggest that you need to stay in more. The question is: where?

Places with low ceilings should not apply.

Answers on a postcard to /dev/null in the first instance.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

I was going to get Chessbase for Iphone, but the reviews are pretty poor. Does anyone have experience with it, or if it has improved?

What functionality do you want from the app?

I'm like a kid in a sweet shop at the moment so everything!

But specifically, I now have:

Stockfish to play,
Chess viewer for pgn file reading (e.g. if I am reading twic, etc.),
I'd like a portable database, but I've heard Chessbase isn't that good.

And since I'm an App noob, anything people may have found which is interesting, I will look at!

I am confident you will like the e+chess app from Dr. Helen Milligan: I wish I had written it myself! :D

I would really appreciate a very simple app to input a game and email it, with a very few additional features, such as remembering which tournament you were playing in and who you were. It's always a struggle to get the games in when I am taking my son to a tournament.

I recomend the Hiarcs app. The latest update improved it a great deal, and it's very easy to email games.
Plus Mark is very good at customer support.
